Sada Thompson, known to television audiences for her portrayal as the matriarch in the 1976 ABC series "Family," died May 4 from lung disease in Danbury, Conn. She was 83.She starred for four seasons on the Alphabet skein and, in 1978, won her first and only Emmy Award for the role. In a career that began with a live performance in the 1954 production of "Goodyear Television Playhouse" and ended with a co-starring role in the 1998 telepic "The Patron Saint of Liars" and then in the bigscreen pic "Pollock" two years later, Thompson's career lasted six decades.Following "Family," Thompson made several guest appearances across the dial, including spots in "The Love Boat," "Cheers" and "Law & Order."Thompson had a lengthy legit career as well. She made her off-Broadway debut in the 1955 production of "Under Milkwood" and Thompson won the Tony Award for top actress in a play for her performance in "Twigs," in which she played various characters.According to the New York Times, which first reported her death, she is survived by her daughter, Liza Sguaglia; her husband, Donald Stewart, a former executive for Pan Am Airlines; and a brother, David.
