Famous Olympic Teams of the Last 50 Years: The 1992 Dream Team

7:57 pm Recreation and Sports

Inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010, the 1992 Dream Team stands immortalized as the greatest team assembled.?

Comprised of the best NBA players from its most talent laden era, the 1992 dream team?was the country?s answer to a disappointing third-place finish in the Seoul Olympic four years earlier. Michael Jordan. Magic Johnson. Larry Bird. The team featured three of the five greatest players to ever play the game. Each of the supporting cast, save for little used Christian Laettner, were NBA legends in their own right. The Dream Team took the Olympics by storm, winning by an average of 44 points a game. There were no opponents, only fans garbed in different jerseys. Opposing teams lined for autographs and pictures before games; then were unmercifully dismissed. For more than their considerable skill, the Dream Team will be remembered for giving basketball celebrity status on a global scale.Approaching two decades later, and even though center David Robinson looks as if he hasn?t aged a day since, the members have long since hung up their sneakers. Some, such as Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, have taken to ownership. Forwards Chris Mullin and Larry Bird have tried their hand at running teams. But whatever post playing career endeavors the Dream Team have, their legacy continues to influence the game. The influx of foreign players into the NBA, and every memorable Olympic team outside of the U.S.A., is a direct byproduct of the 1992 Dream Team.
