Microsoft Security Essentials 4.0

Many antivirus vendors announce each new version with great fanfare; not Microsoft. Microsoft Security Essentials 4.0 (free) released so quietly that I almost missed it. In truth, Microsoft doesn't refer to the version number at all, just to "the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials." There isn't a lot that's new here, and my test results were about the same as before, so perhaps downplaying the new version makes sense.

This product is a straight-up antivirus, not a feature-stuffed suite wannabe. Its main window shows current security status, with a button to resolve any problems. Another button launches an on-demand scan. That's it!

Saved by Windows Defender Offline
Microsoft Security Essentials installed successfully on ten of my twelve malware-infested test systems. Ransomware on one test system made launching normal Windows impossible, and Microsoft Security Essentials won't install in Safe Mode. On the advice of Microsoft Tech Support I downloaded the bootable Windows Defender Offline. A full scan with this tool solved the problem and allowed me to complete the installation.

On another test system, Microsoft Security Essentials refused to update or scan because it claimed the system was not running a valid copy of Windows. In truth, the Windows installation was fine, but malware fooled the antivirus into thinking otherwise. Tech support advised reinstalling Windows, an entirely inappropriate course given that Microsoft's own validation tools report a genuine installation.

I ran a full scan using Windows Defender Offline, but it didn't solve the problem. On this particular system the malware bamboozled Microsoft Security Essentials.

Mediocre Malware Cleanup
On the malware-infested systems where Microsoft Security Essentials installed and ran correctly, a full scan took hours. Scanning my standard clean test system took 72 minutes, about twice the average. And despite these lengthy scans, the cleanup wasn't very thorough.

Microsoft Security Essentials detected 63 percent of the threats, lower than any product tested with the current or previous set of malware samples. It left behind executable files for more than half of those it did detect, and several of them were still running after their alleged removal. Its overall score of 4.3 points for malware cleanup is the lowest of any current product.

40 percent detection of rootkit samples is also a new low. However, Microsoft thoroughly cleaned up all the rootkits it did find, scoring 4.0 points. Quite a few products tested with the previous malware collection scored lower, despite higher detection rates. Even so, I wouldn't rely on Microsoft to clean up a malware-infested system.

For an explanation of the testing and scoring process, see How We Test Malware Removal.

'Avengers' Captain America Sees Bromance Potential With Agent Coulson

Chris Evans tells MTV News, 'There's a history there; there's a respect.'
By Kara Warner

With each passing day, we inch closer and closer to the U.S. release date of "Marvel's The Avengers," this summer's next big thing. Thanks to a slew of positive reviews and impressive box office numbers overseas, we're pretty sure we know enough about the film to be both excited and highly optimistic about what we'll see onscreen.

But not so much that we aren't loving reading and watching everything the cast has to say about the film, like Scarlett Johansson's hope for more Black Widow and Hawkeye action and Chris Evans' thoughts about who his isolated and slightly lonely Captain America would look to for friendship.

"I'd say [Agent] Coulson (Clark Gregg), because I think he looks up to Cap. There's a history there; there's a respect," Evans told MTV News. "It felt more of a common ground. Everyone else in the film is coming from such [different places]. [Bruce] Banner has been off the grid, Thor is from another world, Iron Man does his own thing. It just felt like Coulson was the one welcoming into the group."

Although Captain America and Thor aren't necessarily best friends in the film, it's obvious that Evans and his co-star Chris Hemsworth bonded during filming, particularly over the fact that they both had to adhere to strict diet and exercise regimens to stay in their characters' impressive fighting shape. We asked the actors to reveal how many fun calories they actually consumed on a daily basis to do so.

"It's not the fun calories," Hemsworth explained.

Evans chimed in: "It's not donuts and pizzas."

Hemsworth insisted, "It's dried chicken breasts and brown rice and broccoli. Try eating 10 of them a day; that combination is not fun."

And while those foods are definitely healthy, Hemsworth is right: They're not fun.

Check out everything we've got on "Marvel's The Avengers."

Is Joshua Ledet The Best 'American Idol' Singer Of All Time?

'He's really good and probably the best singer of the last three or four seasons,' one 'Idol' expert tells MTV News.
By Gil Kaufman

Just about every season of "American Idol" seems to have at least one: a singer whose talent is so impressive and complete that their weekly performances come off as effortless. Whether it's winners like Ruben Studdard, Fantasia or Carrie Underwood, or runners-up like Adam Lambert, Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson or Chris Daughtry, these finalists make it seem easy.

If you believe Randy, Jennifer and Steven, we are seeing one of those rare moments right now in the form of Joshua Ledet. The old-soul singer has been crushing it without fail just about every week on the show, with just a few missteps along the way.

"I've been doing this 11 years, and you're one of the best singers ever on this show. Ever!" Jackson said following Ledet's take on the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody." "No matter what goes down, you're one of the best singers ever on this show, and that is a big feat, that was incredible. Nobody could do that better." Tyler offered similar praise earlier in the show after Ledet pulled off a near-flawless cover of the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," telling Josh, "You've gotta be one of the top two best 'Idols' of all time." Hell, Lopez, who is 42, called Ledet one of the "best singers I've seen in 50 years!"

So, is Josh one of the best "Idol" singers of all time? Or just one of the best singer ever, period? We convened a panel of "Idol" experts and asked them to weigh in.

"Idol" blogger MJ Santilli said it is undeniable that Josh is a gifted singer, but she begged to differ with Tyler's claim that Ledet is one of the top "Idol" contenders. "Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Ruben Studdard are, arguably, better singers," she said. "When Joshua is excited, he has the tendency to push his vocals to the breaking point. He's had missteps along the way -- his 'gospel' rendition of Billy Joel's 'She's Got A Way' was a hot mess of over-singing."

And, at just 20 years old, Santilli said she doesn't get the sense that Ledet has a complete handle on who he is as an artist. "In comparison to DeAndre Brackensick, who demonstrated knowledge of the greats that came before him, Joshua seems to have very little understanding of not only past masters, but current pop trends," she said.

Could it be that Josh's repeated claims that he's unfamiliar with the songs he's crushing is a savvy rope-a-dope move? Maybe. But as far as Entertainment Weekly staff writer Kyle Anderson is concerned, Ledet is "technically very good," but seems to be good at just one thing. "Even for a show that deals in hyperbole, that seems awfully hyperbolic," he said of the sky-high judge's comments on Wednesday night. "He's really good and probably the best singer of the last three or four seasons, mostly because the past few have tended toward people with gimmicks nor niches, so it's been a while since a pure voice has blown us away."

Former MTV News "Idol in 60 Seconds" host and "Idol" authority Jim Cantiello thinks the problem might be that while Ledet sings it very well, he excels at a style of music that just isn't very "now."

"The only pop artist who has success dabbling in retro-ish R&B tunes is Bruno Mars (and, by extension, Cee Lo, which Mars had a hand in). Yet Bruno injects a modern spin to his retro leanings and has the charisma and personality to back it up," Cantiello said of Ledet's throwback Otis Redding style of gritty R&B belting. "Joshua has only shown strength going REAL old school and typically has the presence of a sedated patient."

Despite the over-the-top raves from Interscope boss Jimmy Iovine and bestie "Little" Steven Van Zandt, Cantiello wondered whether the label had "a secret top-notch retro unit with the right songwriters and producers that could craft Joshua the perfect throwback album." There is no doubt that Ledet crushed it when he sang "To Love Somebody" and, earlier in the season, "When a Man Loves a Woman," but the issue, he said, is that nobody writes those kinds of songs anymore.

"In order to have a big radio hit, Joshua and Interscope would literally have to bring an entire genre back to life, and I'm not sure the personality-challenged Ledet is the one to start that movement," he lamented. Maybe the judges meant that Joshua is "one of the best young male soul singers to come out of the show, versus one of the best singers period," Cantiello speculated, ticking off a list of others who were more versatile and have massive voices (Lambert, Kelly Clarkson, Melinda Doolittle, Fantasia).

Do you think Joshua Ledet is one of the best "Idol" singers of all time? Let us know in the comments!

Etihad Airways takes stake in Aer Lingus

(AP) ? Fast-growing Etihad Airways has taken a nearly 3 percent stake of Aer Lingus as part of a strategy to build closer bonds with the Irish carrier, the Abu Dhabi-based airline said Tuesday.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. But it appears part of a wider Etihad effort to seek shares in smaller carriers to gain a possible edge in its rivalries with Gulf carriers Emirates and Qatar Airways.

Etihad said Tuesday the 2.987 percent stake in Aer Lingus reflects a "desire to forge a commercial partnership with the Irish national carrier."

Etihad in recent months has bought large stakes in Airberlin and Air Seychelles in a bid to challenge Emirates and Qatar Airways. Etihad operates 10 flights a week from its Abu Dhabi hub to Dublin.

The head of Qatar Airways, however, said the carrier is not currently looking to acquire another airline.

Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar al-Baker said the airline is focused on building its own business, and doesn't want to take on the financial problems of restructuring a weaker carrier. Al-Baker was in Dubai for a travel expo.

State-owned Qatar Airways competes for long-haul international passengers with Dubai-based Emirates airline and Etihad Airways.

"Qatar Airways is not interested in an acquisition at this time," al-Baker said before Etihad's deal was announced. "We do not just acquire loss-making entities because we are going to get it at a very good price and take advantage of their difficulties."

He said Qatar Airways would only be interested in well-run, promising airlines that are unable to find needed cash. Qatar Airways already has stake in the Luxembourg-based freight carrier Cargolux.

"We are not in this business of restructuring. We are in the business of making money," he said.

Last month, Etihad said its sales jumped 28 percent to $989 million in the first quarter of the year as it pushed ahead with its rapid expansion.

In February, Aer Lingus reported a strong growth in profits for 2011 despite the country's economic downturn. The Dublin-based carrier says in a statement Tuesday its full-year net profit rose 66 percent to euro71.2 million ($95.6 million). Sales rose 6 percent to euro1.29 billion ($1.73 billion).

Reports have linked Etihad to Air Lingus in the past. While not commenting directly on a tie-up with the Irish carrier, Etihad has expressed an interest in pursuing further acquisitions to expand its reach. The carrier also suggested its minority stake buy could be the start of a deeper partnership.

"Etihad Airways believes a possible partnership could produce significant commercial benefits for both airlines," Etihad said in a statement announcing the deal. Etihad executives were not immediately available to comment further.

Etihad has been flying to Dublin since 2007. It operates a premium lounge and an engineering maintenance facility at the Irish airport.

Etihad also holds nearly 30 percent German carrier Airberlin and 40 percent of Air Seychelles.
