The Central Library opened in 1983 to address the city's need for a large, centralized ?location to administer the city's five other libraries. It also allowed for a consolidated and much larger reference section than what was available at the smaller branches.?

What this building makes up for in architectural charm is size. A library-lover's dream, the rows for fiction, nonfiction, teen fiction and children's books seem to never end. The plethora of music and movies available on CD and DVD rival the best music or movie shops. 'Dark Shadows' Trailer: Where Is It, Tim Burton?

With just 77 days until the film's release, we're still waiting for even a taste of the campy Johnny Depp feature.
By John Mitchell

Today is February 24. Tim Burton's anticipated summer blockbuster adaptation of the vampire soap opera "Dark Shadows" is set to hit theaters on May 11. There are 77 days between now and the release of the film. And we still don't have a trailer — not even a teaser.

Special-effects-heavy blockbusters opening much later in the summer, including July's "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "The Dark Knight Rises," have already debuted multiple trailers to satisfy the bloodlust of fans hungry for just a taste of the movies they are counting down the days for. But we "Shadows" devotees have been kept waiting in the dark too long, not unlike Barnabas (Johnny Depp) locked up in a coffin and hidden away in the Collins family mausoleum.

But lo, what's that in the distance I hear? Buzz that consumer surveying of two potential trailers, a shorter teaser and longer full trailer, took place earlier this week. To be fair to all involved, by "buzz" we really mean "Internet gossip," but it's pretty much in line with what we've been able to pull together about the film from interviews with Burton and Helena Bonham Carter from late last year — namely that the director is injecting the film with an undercurrent of dark comedy.

The GIF warriors over at Oh No They Didn't got word on Tuesday from a variety of tipsters that testing on varied trailers was underway. And the buzz is ... good? We've long been hopeful that the film would be "vintage Burton." By that we mean dark, weird and kind of funny, and from what the ONTD tipsters are saying, that's exactly what we may be getting. At his best, the director was capable of a balancing act few others would dare attempt. He made us care about a very odd man who had scissors for hands, after all, and laugh at the strange and colorful suburban world around him.

Much of the comedy in the film appears to stem from Barnabas' trouble acclimating to the modern world (well, 1972) when he is aroused from his centuries-long slumber by Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley). According to tipster Ross2287, Depp's delivery is spot on when he hears a car for the first time and calls out, "Show yourself Satan!" Later, during a fight with Eva Green's evil witch Angelique, Depp earned laughs from the audience when he requested she "strategically place your wonderful lips upon my posterior and kiss it repeatedly."

More choice one-liners arise when Barnabas is introduced to his descendants. Based on these accounts of the alleged in-the-works trailers, it's looking like the always lovable Chloe Moretz (who plays Caroline Collins) may well be a scene stealer. When Depp's Barnabas is introduced to her and finds out she is 15, he can't help but warn, "And no husband? You must put those birthing hips to good use at once lest your womb shrivel up and die."

Later, in what is said to be the full-length trailer, Depp sees television for the first time and is astounded, asking, "What sorcery is this?" before he rips the back panel off and yells, "Reveal yourself, tiny songstress!" Moretz then looks to her 200-year-old vampire cousin and says, "Are you stoned or something?"

Is any of this even true? Looks like we'll have to wait and see, though we decided to run with it because it's all we have. Do you hear that, Tim Burton? It's all we have. When it comes to this trailer, we can't help but repeat one of Depp's lines from the alleged mystery trailer: "Show yourself!"

Do you think the ONTD tipsters have it right? Is Tim Burton readying a dark comedy with his "Dark Shadows" adaptation? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @JohnMitchell83 with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!

Are mobile bar codes changing the way consumers shop? - Mobile ...

Mobile bar codes are increasingly gaining momentum and companies such as Toys R Us and Glamour are placing them on billboards and walls ? providing consumers another way to shop their favorite products.

Although the technology is still emerging, it certainly has the opportunity to change the way consumers shop. Brands and marketers are beginning to see the potential of mobile bar codes and are using them in their marketing strategies.

?The immediacy of being able to purchase something you see advertised in a magazine or other out-of-home signage allows consumers to conveniently purchase the product on-the-spot, without having to search or step foot into a store,? said Nicole Skogg, CEO of SpyderLynk, New York .

?We believe that the use of mobile bar codes overall, especially mcommerce-enabled bar codes, will continue to grow as consumers become more familiar with the technology,? she said. ?Adoption rates will also continue to grow as marketers think more strategically about the use of bar codes and become more focused on delivering value.

?Well-executed, mobile bar codes drive consumer consideration and help position a brand as relevant and enticing. Poorly executed mobile bar codes, at best, serve to frustrate consumers and, at worst, are ignored all together.?

On the go shopping
Last year, Toys R Us rolled out a virtual store that let consumers scan QR codes featured on billboards and shop the company?s 2011 Hot Toy List.

On-the-go commuters and travelers in the New York metro area were encouraged to take part in the initiative. The billboards were located in John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and nearly 40 NJ Transit Stations feature the showcased items (see story).

Most recently, Glamour unveiled its Apothecary Wall that features products from Unilever and Juicy Couture.

The Apothecary Wall has SpyderLynk Snaptags next to each product. Users are encouraged to download Glamour?s Friends & Fans iPhone app to scan the mobile bar code and buy the featured product right then and there.

?Placement is critical to success in adoption rates,? Ms. Skogg said. ?One of our key messages to our clients is that the placement of a mobile bar code will drive usage.

?Engaged media such as magazines, email, online and street teams at events will drive higher response rates than passive media such as event displays and out-of-home signage like a billboard ? which is typically passed by rather than viewed from a closer proximity while standing still, making it difficult for consumers to engage,? she said. ?There are much more creative ways to deploy bar codes with the Apothecary Wall being an excellent example.

?Glamour?s innovative use of the Apothecary Wall allowed them to extend the reach of the magazine, while making it fun for consumers to shop on-the-spot. By recreating a shopping isle with a 2D design, the Apothecary Wall was intuitive, approachable and easy for consumers to interact with.?

Mobile sophistication
There is an increase in the sophistication of mobile bar codes and their implementation compared to last year.

Brands and marketers are incorporating mobile bar codes across their entire marketing mix.

This comprehensive approach to mobile is giving marketers the ability to model, segment and better target consumers.

Mobile commerce-enabled mobile bar codes give retailers the opportunity to extend the reach of their bricks-and-mortar retail outlets.

?We are beginning to see mobile bar codes have an impact on the retail experience however, there is still much consumer education and awareness needed for mobile bar codes to really change the way consumers shop,? said Laura Marriott, CEO of NeoMedia Technologies, Boulder, CO.

?Many major global brands and retailers, such as Calvin Klein, McDonalds, Macy?s and Target, have helped to increase this awareness by taking advantage of the ability mobile bar codes provide to bring engagement and interactivity to a consumer?s experience with a brand,? she said.

?By simply scanning the mobile bar code, consumers can instantly access an unlimited amount of data on the brand and product of interest ? from product information and reviews to special offers ? but further integration with a brand or retailer?s existing loyalty, CRM or couponing implementations will also help to drive consumer uptake.?

According to Ms. Marriott, mobile bar codes provide an easy, instant means to connect with the brand.

?I believe we will see significant uptake of these services,? Ms. Marriott said. ?Mobile bar codes still have a bit of the newness factor and are fun to engage with, which definitely also helps to drive interactions.

?And making the shopping experience even more accessible to consumers via mobile bar codes, is definitely a winning combination,? she said. ?We do expect to see these types of initiatives becoming more commonplace in the next year, which will help consumers become more comfortable with using their mobile to scan and buy on the go.

?In 2012 we should expect to see a rise in mobile bar code scanning implementations resulting in greater consumer participation, expanded loyalty initiatives and an overall enhanced consumer experience when in-store ? much more than a simple resolution to a Web URL.? Coupled with this, we expect to see hardware solutions in retail support mobile bar code scanning on a much wider basis in 2012.?

Mobile bar codes make shoppers more intelligent wherever they may be.

Consumers access more relevant content based on what their specific interests.

Additionally, with mobile bar codes shoppers can now access product reviews and price comparisons via their mobile device. This allows them to make more informed decisions on the spot when making a purchase.

?We do see some customers getting more comfortable buying products on their mobile devices, but we are not at the mass adoption level yet,? said Mike Wehrs, CEO of Scanbuy, New York. ?Thousands of people made purchases through our app over the holidays as they were scanning UPC codes from products, but there are many ways for retailers to harness that activity.

?Virtual shops are a growing phenomenon which can really enable someone to buy from anywhere,? he said.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? President Barack Obama apologized to Afghans on Thursday for the burning of Qurans at a U.S. military base, trying to assuage rising anti-American sentiment as an Afghan soldier gunned down two American troops during another day of angry protests.

The U.S.-led military coalition says the Muslim holy books were sent by mistake to a garbage burn pit at Bagram Air Field and the case is under investigation. The explanation and multiple apologies from U.S. officials have yet to calm outrage over the incident, which has also heightened tension between international troops and their Afghan partners.

Thousands of protesters, some shouting "Long live Islam!" and "Death to America!" staged demonstrations across Afghanistan for a third day. Protesters climbed the walls of a U.S. base in the east, threw stones inside and adorned an outside wall with the Taliban's trademark white flag.

At other sites, demonstrators burned tires or American flags. Afghan police and international troops fired guns in the air to disperse the crowds.

The protests sparked clashes with Afghan security forces that left at least five demonstrators dead. A Norwegian soldier was wounded by a hand grenade hurled into a coalition compound.

On Wednesday, six people died in protests in Kabul and three other provinces.

The civil unrest comes at a time when Afghan President Hamid Karzai is trying to negotiate a long-term partnership agreement with the United States to govern the activities of U.S. forces in Afghanistan after 2014, when most foreign combat troops will have left or taken on support roles.

Karzai called for calm until an investigation is completed, but the incident highlighted the fitful and often strained relationship of the two nations.

White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One that Obama's apology to Karzai was "appropriate given the sensitivity" of the issue. He said the apology was part of a three-page letter to the Afghan leader. Presidential apologies are rare, but he noted that former White House press secretary Dana Perino apologized on behalf of President George W. Bush in 2008 after a U.S. serviceman shot a Quran.

Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the National Security Council at the White House, said Obama's letter, which addressed issues being negotiated in the partnership document, was delivered by Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan. In the letter, Obama expressed "regret and apologies over the incident in which religious materials were unintentionally mishandled." Vietor said

Karzai met Thursday with parliamentarians ? many of whom had been particularly vitriolic Wednesday in calling for Afghans to wage a holy war against international forces. The Afghan president told the lawmakers they were right to raise their voices against the desecration of Islam's holy book, but said a government investigation was the appropriate way to handle the case, according to a statement issued by his office.

The statement said Karzai told the lawmakers that a U.S. officer responsible for the burning "didn't understand" what he was doing and that the United States had "accepted the mistake of its officer."

The coalition said the investigation is still under way.

The unrest started Tuesday when Afghan workers at the sprawling American base north of Kabul noticed that Qurans and other Islamic texts were in the trash that coalition troops dumped into a pit where garbage is burned. Some Afghan workers burned their fingers as they tried to salvage some of the books. Afghan government officials said initial reports indicated four Qurans were burned.

The materials had been taken from a library at Parwan Detention Facility, which adjoins the base, because they contained extremist messages or inscriptions. Writing inside a Quran is forbidden in the Islamic faith, and it is unclear whether the handwritten messages were found in the holy book or other reading materials.

A military official said it appeared that detainees at the prison were exchanging messages by making notations in the texts.

A delegation of Afghan religious leaders, lawmakers and government representatives visited Bagram as part of the investigation. They issued a statement late Thursday calling for an end to protests and accused insurgents of infiltrating the gatherings to foment violence. They said they expected those responsible for the Quran burning to be prosecuted through the U.S. military court system.

The Taliban used the opportunity to incite more attacks on foreign forces. In a statement, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid described the burning as an "unforgivable crime." He urged Afghan army and police to become "real sons of the nation" by turning their guns on coalition forces.

Afghan authorities said demonstrations were staged inside the capital and in seven of Afghanistan's 34 provinces.

The deadliest was held outside an American base in the Khogyani district of Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan. Two protesters were killed by Afghan police and an Afghan soldier turned his gun on American troops, killing two.

It was the latest in a rising spate of incidents where Afghan soldiers or police or militants wearing their uniforms, have shot and killed U.S. and NATO service members.

District chief Mohammad Hassan said the two Americans were shot by a member of the Afghan National Army stationed at the base. Pentagon press secretary George Little later confirmed the two U.S. troops had died.

In northern Afghanistan, more than 10,000 people demonstrated at four locations in Baghlan, the capital of Baghlan province. Sayed Zamanuddin, deputy provincial police chief, said protesters tried to burn down a police office and then fired at police. He said the police returned fire. One person was killed.

In the south, two people were killed in Dihrawud district of Uruzgan province, said Fareed Ayal, a spokesman for the provincial police. He said insurgents infiltrated the demonstration and shooting broke out between the police and those in the crowd of about 2,000.

Also in the north, protesters hurled rocks and tried to remove the razor wire from the perimeter of a U.S. base in Mehterlam, the capital of Laghman province.

"The burning of Quran broke our hearts," protester Mohammad Issa said.

Police broke up the demonstration by using water cannon, batons and by firing above the heads of the demonstrators.

Hundreds of other Afghans protested peacefully on the eastern outskirts of Kabul, outside Bagram Air Field, in Jalalabad in the east, in Faryab province in the west and in Khoshi district of Logar province, where demonstrators burned a U.S. flag.

"Apologies are not enough," declared Mohammad Qasim Sediqi, leader of the Khoshi district council. The culprits "have to be put on trial and culprits should face the law."

Southern Baptist leaders OK 'Great Commission'

FILE - In this Dec. 7, 2011 file photo, the headquarters of the Southern Baptist Convention is shown in Nashville, Tenn. The nation's largest protestant denomination will definitely remain "Baptist," but leaders are thinking about whether it will be "Southern" for much longer. Southern Baptist Convention President Bryant Wright was expected to present the recommendation of a task force assigned to study a name change to the denomination's executive committee at a meeting Monday night, Feb. 20, 2012. (AP Photo/Mark Humphrey, File)

(AP) ? Some Southern Baptists worry that their denomination's name still carries the stigma of a 19th century split with northern Baptists over slavery. Others who fought hard to build the brand and its conservative theology and politics don't want to see it go.

So the idea to add the description of "Great Commission Baptists" to the name of the Southern Baptist Convention might be a compromise that excites almost none of the 16 million who make up the nation's largest Protestant denomination.

"It's not clear-cut. We can't fully criticize or fully celebrate," said Jonathan Merritt, a faith and culture writer and young minister at Cross Pointe Church near Atlanta. He wanted a new legal name.

"I serve in a big, multiethnic church here in Atlanta, and as late as last Sunday there was an African-American couple that said when they found out we were a Southern Baptist church, they almost didn't join," he said.

The "Great Commission" description endorsed by the SBC's executive committee on Tuesday would be strictly optional. It still must be voted on by delegates at the annual convention this summer. Southern Baptist churches are independent, and many of them don't have "Southern" in their names anyway.

Supporters of the "Great Commission" name argue it would offer an official identity for churches trying to spread the Gospel to diverse groups of people outside the South and worldwide.

Some conservative church members don't even want the option: Wiley Drake, pastor of First Southern Baptist Church in Buena Park, Calif., vowed to fight even an alternate name.

"There are certain things you ought not to compromise on," he said.

Others, like the Rev. Joseph Lyles, said the alternative name could help in reaching out to African-Americans in particular. He leads the Fort Foote Baptist Church in Fort Washington, Md., and is a former president of the SBC's African-American Fellowship.

"Sometimes among some other African-American pastors, they find out you're a Southern Baptist and they look at you like, 'You're selling us out,'" he said.

But he also worries that someone might join a church with the Great Commission Baptist name and then feel tricked when they found out it was a Southern Baptist Church.

And Lyles said the name issue was secondary to another possible event in changing the image and appeal of the faith: African-American pastor Fred Luter Jr. of New Orleans was elected last year to SBC's No. 2 position, first vice-president. Most in that post have gone on to become president.

If Luter is elected president, he would be the first black leader of a denomination that has been predominately white for much of its history, but is beginning to show more diversity.

"If that happens, to me it would be more significant than a name change," Lyles said. "It would be a historic moment."

The notion of changing the Southern Baptist name is not new: It was first proposed in 1903 and has been unsuccessfully brought up more than a dozen times since. The fact that membership and baptisms are declining gives it new urgency.

That's why Boston University Sociology of Religion Professor Nancy Ammerman thinks the new name is an odd choice. The "Great Commission" refers to Matthew 28:16-20, in which Jesus instructs his disciples at Galilee to "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

Ammerman said the biblical reference was too unfamiliar to help bring in new members.

"Only someone who is already an insider is going to know what that refers to," she said. ".... It strikes me as exactly opposite of the way I thought they would go."

The optional name probably has a better chance of succeeding at the convention, where past proposals for a legal name change have failed.

Supporters will still have to win over people like Wilford Dorroh, a 78-year-old retired power plant worker in western Kentucky who has attended a Southern Baptist church in Central City since 1962.

Dorroh calls himself a "real strong conservative" and said he heard the news of the new name on Tuesday.

"I'm against it because it's a tradition that I think we need to keep," he said. "There's people who don't like us because of the name. Well, if they didn't like us because of the name, they wouldn't like us because of something else. So I'm not in favor of trying to satisfy everybody who don't like us. I'm in favor of keeping what we got."

Darrel Orman, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Stuart, Fla., is on the executive committee and at first opposed any name change. He ended up voting for it Tuesday, saying he was relieved by the compromise. He said the spectrum of opinions on the current name ranges from "those who believe the name was inspired like Scripture" to those who want to "bulldoze the whole thing."

Malcolm Yarnell, a professor at Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and director of its Center for Theological Research, sees some benefit for ministries on the leading edge of winning souls.

" ... for those that are church planters, especially if they're in frontier states, non-Southern states, they will see it as a great benefit because they can refer to themselves without having to refer to the cultural baggage," he said. "Because you know to be a Southerner in the North carries baggage, and we all know that."

It remains to be seen if and how the alternative will be used. The names could be used together, like "Southern Baptist Convention ? Great Commission Baptists," or either could be used by itself.

Albert Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, got the ball rolling in a tweet on Monday night after the proposal was presented.

"Let the word go forth: THE Southern Baptist Theological Seminary proudly is a Great Commission Baptists institution."

Lesbian Parenting and Sri Lankan Identity ? N. Gitanjali Lena in ...

?As a parent, I seek to change the world for and with my child.? So begins ?All Our Roots Need Rain: Queer Parenting from the Sri Lankan Diaspora?, by N. Gitanjali Lena. But to do that, she continues, her son must understand his family and cultural history. This in spite of culturally pervasive heterosexism that leads many to alienate, and attempt to block them from this fundamental right:

Sri Lankans have survived three decades of war. This is still a time of war. Three generations of children have only known our island in crisis. My son has only known the island from a distance like many other children of immigrants and refugees. The cultural distance increases exponentially since his mother is queer and unmarried. The sexism and homophobia of my various communities act like border officials keeping us out.

Several aunties and uncles flatly ignore my co-parent, my son, and me. We don?t get invitations and their children are kept away from us. One of my aunties was shocked to see that my son was respectful and articulate despite being raised by queers. Another aunty on seeing me at an event without husband said, ?Well at least you have a son, you have someone.? Some roots get overwatered, rot, and need to be pruned. That said, I am incredibly lucky to have a loving and supportive mother, father, sister, cousins, aunties, and uncles to provide me and my son with a sense of community.

Over the years I have learned to understand the choices my parents made in assimilating. Who am I to judge them? As part of the pre-war, late1960s brain drain, they charted the immigrant journey from Sri Lanka to France to England to Canada. They eloped when my Sinhalese grandpa prohibited their marriage. Twenty years later that same grandpa hid Tamil friends and neighbours in his home as Sinhalese mobs hunted them down on the streets of Colombo.

In Ottawa in the 1980s, they were young middle-class professionals who wanted their daughters to fit in. You see, multiculturalism, that celebrated liberal phenomenon, was in its infancy, and we still got plenty of knocks at school for being ?Pakis,? even though we pointed out that we were actually Sri Lankan. As a result, we didn?t want to be Sri Lankan and they stopped trying to teach us. But the presence of all my grandparents in our home at different times in my childhood was like an umbilical cord to Sri Lanka.

The way my grandparents died is typical of the divided and tormented experiences of our families. My Sinhalese grandparents died dappled in the fierce gold Colombo sun, while the Tamil ones died wrapped in the grey chill of Ontario. The Sinhalese half died at home in their Kotahena neighbourhood where they belonged. The Tamil half died diasporic deaths, lost in Scarborough and Markham, but left clear instructions: bury us backhome. I loved my grandparents so deeply but often reluctantly, misunderstanding them until it was almost too late. To me, the death of each grandparent was more than the loss of a loved one. With each I lost a library, a teacher, a storyteller, and a historian. That?s what relatives hold for you when dominant European cultures reflect no part of your ancestry or culture. For example, when the Sri Lankan army burned down the Jaffna library in 1981, my grandpa became my Tamil library. This is critical for a people surviving genocide. Now that he?s gone, I rely on my uncles and scholarly friends to teach me about our political history and our social movements. Neither of my grandmothers lived to meet my son but they would have nurtured him well, while tenderly anointing his temples with 4711 eau de cologne. When I told my Tamil grandpa I was pregnant, he told me I was courageous. He knew full well that I would be scorned as a queer mother. Truth be told, he was relieved that I didn?t want to have an abortion. He accepted my son as his ?kunju? and adored my co-parent who is a Black working-class queer woman. Clearly my grandfather understood me. Traditionally, he chose each grandchild?s Tamil name. He had originally suggested names with meanings like ?Prince of the world? and ?King of the universe,? but when I requested something less macho, he came up with ?Amuthan? meaning ?sweet like ambrosia.?

Lena continues by discussing her aunts? stories of brave resistance to male oppression in war, the experience of seeking out different communities within the diaspora that can make her feel whole:

We go to as many family and community events as we can, to feed our thirst. There are times I feel comfortable in my skin and there are times I stomach the anxiety about how my son will be perceived and treated. Sometimes I am so nervous I cannot eat, which is tragic since I am cheating myself out of home-cooked crisp vadais with pol sambol, tangy meen curry, fiery prawns, and iddiappam. Instead, I just smoke outside with my uncles and male cousins. My relatives can afford to travel so my son has a great deal of contact with family, but I doubt that is enough. I know myself through family, especially when surrounded by a sea of white. But I also know I am more than just our maze of relatives and family friends. My family is primarily Tamil and Sinhalese, middle-class and Catholic. I want my son to know all kinds of Sri Lankans: queer ones, wild ones, Hindu and Muslim, Burgher ones, working-class ones, socialist ones, musical ones, mixed-race ones. We have to dig for our roots. We have to dig deeper past the surface of colonial manipulation and patriarchy. All sides in the conflict have rewritten ancient and modern history, overemphasizing ethnic divisions and other war-promoting propaganda. We Sri Lankans need to crack open taboos and speak to others. That must be why I yanked my boy from mild-mannered Ottawa and plunked him down in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). Now we are a short ride away from the Scar, home to all things Tamil and diasporic. We call it Little Jaffna, and even though we are from Mattakalaippu, it feels so familiar. Hanging out in Scarborough is cheaper than the several thousand I?d have to save up to take him home, and safer too. The GTA is home to the biggest Tamil diaspora in the world, but no out queer Sri Lankan or Tamil group exists. Thankfully, with a handful of queer Sri Lankan friends in Toronto, on both the Tamil and Sinhalese sides, I get to feel whole now and then. Part of the difficulty of teaching my son about his roots is the hypermilitarism of Sri Lankan society and the simultaneous trivialization of war as a game in the West. Everywhere we go there is a camouflage motif, a soldier movie, a toy gun, a military Halloween costume. Our wars are real. They happen somewhere we have been. The business of war takes our loved ones from us in so many ways. Tamil communities are full of refugees and people traumatized by war. The sounds of fireworks trigger terror memories of cluster-bomb showers. War is not a theme party. Being Sri Lankan in a time of war makes the diaspora self-conscious. Ethnic divisions have grown deeper in some ways and generations are damaged and scarred by torture and rape. That is the dejected backdrop for teaching my son about my homeland that was once a paradise. Seventy thousand people have died, millions are displaced, unique ecosystems are ruined, economies have collapsed, libraries have burned. Forgetting our home is not for us. We are needed in the struggle to rebuild and re-vision. As a queer people we have been told that our struggles are frivolous in a time of war. But there are wars within wars as women and children know; there are social dynamics like homophobia that intensify wars; there are power structures like patriarchy and imperialism that laid the foundations for the war and that continue to undermine peace. These details are not peripheral. Claiming the fullness of our experiences can allow our roots to spread out wherever they need to go.

Waterproof Paint, Plastic Vapor Barrier, Or Concrete Sealer?

What To Use To Control Moisture & Humidity In Your Basement

Generally speaking, homeowners now recognize the importance of creating a vapor barrier on their walls. Whether through waterproof paint, a plastic vapor barrier, a penetrating sealer, or some other method, creating this barrier will prevent water vapor from seeping through the pores of concrete.

In a finished basement, a vapor barrier will protect drywall and insulation from the moisture buildup that would otherwise lead to mold, mildew, and humidity passing through the concrete walls and floors located within the space. In an unfinished basement or cellar, sealing the walls and floor will create a drier environment, protecting stored items from rot and mold, and helping to control that musty smell that's notoriously present in below-grade spaces.

However, there are a lot of basements out there - and a lot of companies competing to earn your consumer dollar on products that will help to control that moisture intrusion.

And, like all things in the home improvement industry, some work better than others.

Let's take a look at the three most common methods of moisture control:

1. Waterproof Paint

Most popular among do-it-yourselfers, many homeowners will opt for waterproof coatings and paints that are available at most local box stores. These products sport big promises, low cost, and seductive warranties that make them look like they're a foolproof choice for any basement.

Unfortunately, these products have three major weaknesses:

* A Non-Penetrating Formula: These paints and coatings are surface-level only, and have a comparatively weak bond on your concrete surfaces.

If this coating is used on surfaces that are dirty, the will peel off. They are also a weak choice for high-traffic areas of floor, where the surface coating can peel off.

* Poor Resistance To Acidity: There's a lot of chemistry going on in the concrete walls of a basement - and the moisture that passes through may be highly acidic. This is particularly true if your basement walls are new, and haven't completed the years-long curing process. This acidity can break the bonds of surface coatings, causing them to blister and peel off.

* Vulnerability To Efflorescence Buildup: Along with moisture, minerals also pass through your basement walls. As the moisture evaporates or recedes, it can leave these minerals in the form of a white, powdery mineral salt known as efflorescence. As this builds up, it can also compromise the bond of paints and coatings. Read your warranty carefully, and you'll see that it probably doesn't cover walls with efflorescence!

To make matters worse, once these coatings fail, they can be extremely troublesome to remove. You'll be working quite hard on those ugly, blistering, peeling walls - and most likely, you'll be renting some equipment as well!

2. Plastic Vapor Barriers

Whether rigid or pliable, plastic vapor barriers are a good choice for preventing moisture that comes through basement walls. Because they attach mechanically to the walls, there is no concern of peeling or detaching from the walls as there is with waterproof paint. Additionally, this is the only solution that can also intercept water flooding through cracks in the concrete - ones that would otherwise bypass sealers and paint coatings. This flooding water would be directed to a perimeter drain system, presuming you have one in place.

Typically, the seal is made permanent with epoxy or caulk along the top and seams.

Plastic vapor barriers install fairly quickly, and there's no VOC's or drying time to worry about. They can give a basement a brighter, more cheerful appearance, or they can be used behind finished walls.

There are three disadvantages to plastic vapor barriers

* Cost: The cost to buy, cut, and attach plastic vapor barriers can be much higher than simply applying a concrete sealer or waterproof paint.

* Mold Concerns: What happens to the moisture that collects behind this plastic vapor barrier? Many homeowners voice concerns of mold and mildew growth, although there is little scientific evidence to support a health issue of mold behind a sealed vapor barrier.

* Not Ideal For Floors: While this is a great option for the walls, it's a less-than-impressive option for the floors. On a very flat floor, plastic floor tiles (without chipboard present) can be a possible vapor barrier substitute, but these tend to click and make noise on less even surfaces.

Despite the disadvantages, these vapor barriers provide a permanent solution, where applicable, and could be considered for moisture control in many homes.

3. Concrete Sealers

For the purpose of this article, we'll discuss sliane-based concrete sealers. These sealers penetrate deep into the pores of the concrete, activating with the minerals in the concrete to create a glasslike barrier deep within the concrete. They're safe to use indoors, and contain little or no VOC's (brand depending).

Sliane-based concrete sealers activate quickly, and can be applied to both cured and newly-placed concrete. They will not change the appearance of the concrete, efflorescence and acidity will not harm them, and they're able to be painted over with ease. Installation is fast (done with a brush, roller, or sprayer), and they're middle-of-the-road in overall cost.

Three disadvantages to consider are as follows:

* Provides Moisture Control ONLY: Unlike plastic vapor barriers, this will not be able to breach cracks or stop flooding water. It's meant only as a sealer for water vapor that would otherwise pass through the pores of the concrete.

* Take Care When Installing: Sliane-based sealers cause etching on glass, should they come in contact with it. When installing, be sure to protect and/or avoid glass surfaces.

* Possible to Overapply: Waterproof paints can be coated thickly, thinly, or in multiple layers, and it's impossible to overapply a plastic barrier. But an installer should be careful to only use enough sliane-based sealer to damp the concrete, as too much will leave a white residue behind.

Sliane-based sealers are the ideal choice for basements that are damp but do not flood, as they are inexpensive, install quickly and subtly, and provide a lasting solution.

Review: 3 online services that track your spending (AP)

This screen shot shows the purchase history page of the Project Slice website. The left column offers ways to narrow the list by merchant or item type. If you bought too much stuff over the past few months, then you likely have a slew of paper and electronic receipts cluttering your life. Now that the holidays are long behind us, it???s time to get organized. (AP Photo/Project Slice)AP - My approach to tracking my spending has traditionally been to wait for credit card bills to come, then (hopefully) pay them off. Three new online services promise to help you do a better job of tracking as you buy.

The victim, Shardae D. Wells, who is seven weeks pregnant, notified police after she and Jeremy P. Delapierre (pictured above), 25, the father of her unborn child and two older children, got into a violent altercation.

Delapierre accused Wells of infidelity in front of his family?s complex, and as they were arguing, he allegedly grabbed her by the throat and tried to strangle her as he pushed her to the ground.

?I could not breathe,? the?26-year-old young woman?told police. ?I almost passed out.? She also showed?investigators?imprints on her neck, throat, and arm that she claims happened during the?scuffle.

When Gainesville police arrived and they attempted to handcuff Delapierre, he ran from them. Meanwhile, reportedly angered by what Wells had done, Clara M. Young (pictured above), Delapierre?s mother, and cousins Jimmie L. Hart (pictured below) and Nathail G. Harrington (pictured last), reportedly attacked her by punching and slapping the pregnant woman in the face until she?tumbled to the ground. Young then allegedly sat on the young Mother to restrain her while Hart and Harrington savagely kicked and beat her repeatedly as she lay helpless on the concrete using her arms to try and shield her pregnancy against the blows.

Police found Delapierre hiding out in a nearby apartment bathroom and arrested him.? When they emerged from the building where the suspect had been hiding, they witnessed Wells being beaten by the family members.? All three suspects were arrested.

According to police, Wells was unable to get up and was coughing up blood.? Her left eye became swollen and?shut, her right arm and neck was cut and her nose was fractured.? Wells was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Delapierre has a previous arrest record for domestic battery and strangulation.? He?is now charged with aggravated and domestic battery by strangulation, criminal mischief, and resisting arrest.? Family members Young, Hart, and Harrington?are charged with aggravated battery on a pregnant woman and tampering with a victim.? All were booked into the Alachua County jail.
