The Central Library opened in 1983 to address the city's need for a large, centralized ?location to administer the city's five other libraries. It also allowed for a consolidated and much larger reference section than what was available at the smaller branches.?
What this building makes up for in architectural charm is size. A library-lover's dream, the rows for fiction, nonfiction, teen fiction and children's books seem to never end. The plethora of music and movies available on CD and DVD rival the best music or movie shops. The magazine display is similar to a duty-free newsstand in the gate of an airport. ?There is ample space to study, plenty of computer terminals, and lots of places to sit and read. Posted signs warn visitors that the library is not a public tutoring place, dissuading a clamorous atmosphere.?
Cranston libraries have kept pace with technology. Download stations are available at each library to borrow mp3s, audiobooks and e-books to use on iPads, iPhones and other readers. The same service is offered online, making a vast selection of media available without the trip to and from the library. There's even a mobile app available, making it easy to browse and check the availability of titles from a smartphone.
