Sony Xperia Z Ultra: hands-on with a 6.4-inch Android phone (update: video)

Sony Xperia Z Ultra handson with a 64inch Android phone

Sony's been explaining the design story behind its new Xperia range at a UK briefing, how it's trying to balance both the dematerialization of tech (touchscreens, gesture interfaces) and a design that's both desirable and beautiful -- and Sony's certainly got the latter down on its new smartphone. The Xperia Z Ultra follows the lines of the rest of the Z-series. With the same "OmniBalance" plane surface of screen, this time reaching 6.4 inches but still running at 1080p resolution, it feels bigger than the original Xperia Z. You're looking at a screen width almost identical to a passport and that 6.5mm profile helps fit it into pockets -- we managed to cram it into our trouser pockets. There's also Qualcomm's notable Snapdragon 800 powering the device on a relatively large 3,000mAh battery, while Sony's simplified the design dropping a few of those much-maligned protective flaps, at least on the headphone socket. There's more impressions and a hands-on video after the break!

Boy Scouts, Mormon Church sued in Idaho pedophile case

By Laura Zuckerman

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - Four men sued the Boy Scouts of America and its largest sponsor, the Mormon Church, on Monday accusing both organizations of failing to protect them from sexual abuse by adult volunteers when they were children at scouting activities in Idaho.

Three of the men said they were abused as members of Boy Scout troops affiliated with the Utah-based church, two of them by a scout leader previously identified as a molester in a complaint brought by a parent.

The fourth plaintiff belonged to a troop sponsored by a chapter of the Elk Club, which was not named as a defendant in the suit.

All the cases of abuse alleged in the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Boise, the state capital, occurred in the early 1980s and 1970s, when the plaintiffs ranged in age from 12 to 14.

Two of the three accused abusers in the lawsuit - both of whom were linked with the Mormon-sponsored troops - were later convicted of sex crimes against children and are now living as registered sex offenders, court records show.

The lawsuit is the latest in a torrent of court cases in numerous states accusing the Boy Scouts of failing to provide adequate safeguards against pedophiles using the organization to prey on children whose parents were led to believe scouting was safe.

Mounting litigation against the Texas-based Boy Scouts has tarnished the wholesome image of a century-old, largely volunteer organization, which prides itself on building good character, citizenship and fitness among its 2.7 million members, mostly boys aged 8 to 17.

The Mormon Church, formally known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has been implicated in several such lawsuits. The church required or strongly encouraged boys in the faith to take part in scouts, and for men to volunteer as scout leaders, according to Monday's suit.

The Boy Scouts of America and Mormon Church both declined in separate statements to comment on pending litigation. Both organizations have said they have taken new measures in recent decades to prevent child sexual abuse within their ranks.

An Oregon court last year forced the Boy Scouts to publicly release 20,000 pages of confidential records, dubbed the "perversion files," documenting suspected or confirmed sexual abuse by the group's leaders and volunteers.

One of the alleged abusers named in Monday's suit was only added to the perversion files four years after a scout's mother told scout and church officials her son was abused by him, and another was listed the same year a Mormon-led troop hired him to do graphic design work, the lawsuit claims.

The four plaintiffs, named in the suit only as "John Does I-IV," are seeking undisclosed monetary damages.

The Adorable Mini-Sports Car Has Gotten a Remarkable Upgrade

The Adorable Mini-Sports Car Has Gotten a Remarkable Upgrade

As you may or may not remember, a few years ago we posted photos of these incredible, half-scale sports cars that?despite being called "children's cars"?are more badass than any car any adult could ever hope to own. And although the junior cars' visionary, Nathan Redfearn, was getting ready to shut down production, the beautiful, tiny, and fully-functional cars struck a chord with so many people that they were able to keep going?much to our benefit. And now they're even getting an awesome new upgrade.

In the words of Redfearn himself:

The strange thing was, the week before you wrote the article, my wife and I had decided we were going to stop producing the junior cars, as they were so incredibly labour intensive to produce and not so profitable. We were very limited to how many we could manufacture?3 cars per month!

The night before your article came out, I was just telling my cousin who lives in Australia how we planned to wind down that business. He was telling us how crazy we were to do so. The next morning we woke up to more than 300 inquiries for our junior cars. Over the coming weeks, as other websites and blogs picked up on the story, we were literally inundated with inquiries for our cars.

But before his work really took off, it all began when Redfearn decided to share his love of classic cars with his then two-year-old nephew, Ayrton. He wasn't satisfied with the quality of toy car currently floating around, so taking matters into his own hands, Redfearn sketched out a child-sized Porsche 356 model and ultimately built the actual prototype and fiberglass molds in the street outside their home in Saigon.

Thus, Group Harrington was born.

The Adorable Mini-Sports Car Has Gotten a Remarkable Upgrade

The Adorable Mini-Sports Car Has Gotten a Remarkable Upgrade

The Adorable Mini-Sports Car Has Gotten a Remarkable Upgrade

While the toy cars were more of a hobby at first, Redfearn found himself handling two years' worth of orders after the post went live. But with this renewed interested, he decided to do a complete overhaul to his cars' design and spent the last two and a half years developing the newest model. In his own words:

Our old models were essentially very pretty go karts. Rear engine, single wheel drive, no suspension, single rear disk brake, small scooter wheels, and very much hand built with each part being machined and made individually. Almost no parts aside from the engines and wheels and gear knob were interchangeable between the models. Also, the cars were a little small?at least for adults to use.

So starting with a clean sheet of paper, I decided to make the new models as REAL cars on a miniature scale. As such, our new models have the following features:

Front mounted engine.

Rear wheel drive.

Limited slip differential.

Independent suspension all round.

Rack and pinion steering.

Disk brakes front and rear. Brembo 4 pot calipers!

Separate steel chassis.

Adjustable pedal box so both adults and kids can comfortable fit.

Rear mounted fuel tank with electric pump.

Wide custom made alloy wheels.

Opening hood and trunk.

Open grilles with more than adequate cooling (this was hard to do with rear mounted engines)

Bright LED lights.

While there are, of course, small differences between each junior car, pretty much everything under the skin (suspension, drive, axles, brakes, etc.) is totally universal, making them far easier to fit and consequently produce. With a team of 32, Redfearn is now able to produce 8-10 of the junior cars every month. And these rides don't just look sweeter, they're handling better too:

The difference in terms of performance is staggering. They are lighter, faster, handle incredibly, and are far more comfortable to sit in and drive. Even though they are only 110cc, they can reach 73 kmh in standard tune. It doesn't handle like a go cart, but like a car! And the weight balance front to rear is great?they are the most flattering car to hoon and drift that I've ever tried.

Another thing we took into account was the ability to modify, tune, and customize. The engines are 110cc quad bike engines built by Loncin (a Honda subsidiary). We've been using these engines for 9 years and have nothing but praise for them. Never once has one broken on us or any customers we've heard rom. They're basically the standard Honda engine found in cub motorbikes, trikes, quad bikes, PT bikes, etc. These ones are 110cc 3 speed with reverse semi-auto (no clutch) and an electronic ignition with electric start. You can buy after market tuning kits for them, which can boost the capacity to 190cc and double the power. The chassis are more than capable should someone wish to do this. We have also designed it so you can change the gearing very easily?without pulling the car apart (there's access from underneath).

Right now, the group is in the process of producing the AC Cobra and Ferrari 250 California Spyder, with plans to launch the Jaguar XK120 and Aston Martin DB5 soon. They're currently accepting orders, but you can also check out one of their distributors in any of the following countries: UK, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait. You can also check out videos of the cars in action on their YouTube page. And for as absolutely gorgeous as these cars are?they also look damn fun to drive. Check out the Group Harrington site for the whole lineup.

Minn.'s Franken hardly a GOP target for defeat

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? Al Franken barely made it into the Senate the first time, squeaking by with 312 votes after months of recounts and legal skirmishes that left Minnesota Republicans salivating at the prospect of snatching the seat back from the former "Saturday Night Live" star in 2014.

So far, that's not playing out according to plan.

Four years into his term, Franken barely figures into the GOP's calculations for trying to wrest control of the Senate from Democrats. Republicans don't consider him a top target for defeat, and they haven't found a strong challenger in the Democratic-leaning state.

Should a competitive race not materialize, Democrats say much, if not all, of the credit should go to Franken himself.

To solidify his then-shaky standing, Franken employed a disciplined strategy that started in 2009 when he was declared the victor of a three-way race in which he won less than 42 percent of the vote. Back then, he spoke of not wanting to "waste this chance" and made repeated promises to keep his head down and do the work. He has largely stuck to that vow, avoiding the national spotlight. He rarely talks to the Washington press corps, has shed his comedic persona and focused on policy, working to be taken seriously.

"People have seen that I did what I said I would do. I came to Washington, I put my shoulder to the wheel and I did the work," Franken said in a recent interview with The Associated Press, expressing optimism that he'll be re-elected. He punted on the question of whether he'd seek a more prominent national voice in a second term, saying: "I'm more worried about what I'm working on tomorrow."

The midterm congressional elections are more than a year away. But Republicans already are going after vulnerable Democrats in their quest to gain the six seats they need to return to Senate power. They're largely focusing on vulnerable Democrats in Republican-tilting states: Louisiana, North Carolina, Alaska and Arkansas, as well as swing and conservative states where Democrats are retiring, like Iowa, South Dakota, West Virginia and Montana.

Minnesota GOP Chairman Keith Downey acknowledged that, because of the tight 2008 margin, Republicans initially assumed Franken would be easy to beat in 2014. "People in politics always make too many assumptions about the future, but that was certainly the perspective," he said.

Today, Downey argues that while the GOP's job may be harder, Franken still can be overtaken because his support is soft.

All things being equal, Minnesota isn't an easy place for Republicans to win these days, given its deep history of electing Democrats and the state GOP's current woes: the debt-plagued party hasn't won a statewide race since 2006. But Franken's standing ? more than 50 percent of those polled last fall by the Minneapolis Star Tribune approved of the job he's doing ? and fairly weak GOP candidates make it even tougher.

Brian Nick, a political consultant with previous experience at the National Republican Senatorial Committee, acknowledged as much, calling Minnesota a "very, very tough state to win" for his side, with more favorable matchups elsewhere.

A big part of the problem for the GOP: High-profile Republicans don't want to run.

Former Sen. Norm Coleman, the incumbent Franken narrowly beat in 2008, opted out of a rematch, citing the "dysfunction" of Washington. Former Gov. Tim Pawlenty got out of politics, taking a job with a Wall Street lobbying group. Reps. Erik Paulsen and John Kline have declined, indicating they could be more effective in the House. And Rep. Michele Bachmann, who isn't running for re-election, has not shown any interest.

So far, Franken has two definite Republican challengers: Mike McFadden, a businessman and political unknown; and Jim Abeler, an eight-term state representative who's never run for higher office. Another lawmaker, state Sen. Julianne Ortman, is also considering a bid.

While the opposition party sorts itself out, Franken is doing what he's done for the past four years: keeping his head down and working on policy that affects seniors, veterans and farmers. That includes what he calls his biggest accomplishment so far: inserting a provision in Obama's health care overhaul that forces health insurance companies to spend up to 85 percent of premiums directly on health care.

More than a mile high and forged by over 160 million years of shifting sands and sandstone, Red Rocks is an amphitheater like no other. The natural acoustics, amazing surrounding landscape and big sky vistas combine to make a concert setting as truly outdoors as possible. And, if the star power coming from the sky isn?t enough of a draw, the star power on stage will get you. Imagine a line-up of intimate (fewer than 10,000 people and seats as close as 10 feet from the stage) shows from Sting, Darius Rucker, Big Head Todd, Widespread Panic, Robert Plant, the Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, BB King and Peter Frampton and George Thorogood as your summer?s entertainment. • Slane Castle, County Meath, Ireland

Along the shores of the River Boyne, 30 minutes north of Dublin, lies Slane Castle, the ancestral home of the Conyngham family. For over 300 years, that family has called the castle home but, for the last 30 plus years, so has rock and roll. Starting with Thin Lizzy in 1981, concerts in a natural amphitheater in the shadow of the castle have been a summer tradition at Slane. Now crowds of 80,000 people flock to the 1,500 acre estate for majestic shows from classic bands like the Rolling Stones (2007) to more modern favorites like Oasis (2009) and Kings of Leon (2011). This summer Bon Jovi will grace the grounds, giving audiences a mix of classic rock and regal living. U2 is best able to attest to life at the castle, having performed there three times and even lived and recorded there during the making of ?The Unforgettable Fire.? That?s what we call proof that U2 is music royalty in Ireland. Search and compare cheap flights to Ireland.

  • Th??tre Antique d?Orange, Orange, France

This classic Roman amphitheater showcases the setting and acoustics of the ancients. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Th??tre Antique features an incredibly preserved stage wall that bore witness to the shows of Roman times. Now the 100 meter (328 foot) long, 37 meter (120 foot) high wall serves as the backdrop to an annual opera festival, the Chor?gies d?Orange, and a diverse and international music line-up ranging from The Cure in 1986 to DJ Laurent Wolf?s 2009 ?Wash My World Festival? to upcoming shows by Chinese piano icon Lang Land and Italian opera duo Patrizia Ciofi and Leo Nucci. Audiences enjoy the excellent sound quality projected from the wall and marvel over the statue of Apollo at center stage and the columns and complex array of theater entrances and structures that date back thousands of years. The setting brings added resonance to the big voices (and names) it hosts. Search and compare cheap flights to France.

  • The Gorge Amphitheater, George, Washington, United States

The Columbia River canyon, the Cascade Mountains and The Who. That?s what you get as a show sitting on the lawn at The Gorge Amphitheater. The simple stage and hillside seating make it clear the scenery, a sweeping vista down Columbia River with a backdrop of the Cascade Mountains, and the music are the draws. The Who is just one of many big names to perform backed up by the gorgeous view. The Gorge has hosted everyone from David Bowie to the Dave Mathews Band and been the site of numerous festivals, including Lilith Fair and Lollapalooza. Look for John Mayer, Phish and Black Sabbath, among others, this summer. Search and compare cheap flights to Washington.

  • Dalhalla, R?ttvik, Sweden

It seems fitting that Earth, Wind and Fire is one of the acts coming to Dalhalla this summer. This limestone quarry turned music venue is another great example of the elements delivering a natural stage. Thanks to a meteorite strike that made the region ripe with limestone and 50 years of excavation, a perfectly shaped acoustic bowl emerged. Now crowds descend into the 55 meter (180 foot) deep, 400 meter (,1300 foot) long hole for the ultimate in surround sound experiences. The dramatic layers of rock that rise above just add to the visual effect. Look for Toto, Sting and Patti Smith to add their music to the mix this summer as well. Search and compare cheap flights to Sweden.

  • Kootenay Lake, Kaslo, British Columbia, Canada

Here?s a venue you won?t find every day. In fact, it only exists for a three-day music festival held each August. The stage for the Kaslo Jazz Festival floats just off the beach on a serene lakefront, with deep blue water, bobbing boats and even some distant hilltops as a backdrop. With attendees lounging in beach chairs or swimming around the stage, the whole event has a casual summertime feel. However, when the musicians take to the floating stage, the energy spikes and the crowd dives into the music as well. With performances from the likes of Tiempo Libre, Dave Brubeck and a host of other jazz, funk and blues performers, the festival (now in its 22nd year) offers a great combination of setting and sound. Search and compare cheap flights to British Columbia.

  • Sarawak Cultural Village, Kuching, Borneo, Malaysia

This outdoor museum is a living exhibit of the many tribes and cultures of Malaysia. Visitors can explore the homes and lifestyles of various native populations in this ethnically diverse region and are treated to daily dance and music performances. However, the biggest show is the annual Rainforest World Music Festival. For three days, the chance to see and explore cultures at the Sarawak Cultural Village goes global as music groups from Ireland, Korea, South Africa, Australia, Colombia and elsewhere take to the stage. Festival goers feast on the native rhythms from every corner of the world. And they do so deep in the rainforest of Borneo. Search and compare cheap flights to Malaysia.

  • Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Athens, Greece

Built initially between 160 and 174 AD by Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, this amphitheater on the southern slope of the Acropolis is a storied as well as scenic venue. For more than 1,500 years, the Roman-style marble theater was little more than a ruin, damaged by fire and buried under farmland. However, as modern Greece emerged, so too did the Herodeon, as it is often called. Extensively restored in the middle of the 20th century, the Herodeon is a center piece of the annual Athens Festival, a summer long program of arts and entertainment dating back to 1955. In addition to hosting a summer of classical, jazz and folk performers for the Athens Festival including, this year, the Greek National Opera as well as Diana Krall and Haris Alexiou, the reborn ruin has been center stage for a number of historic music moments. Elton John, Sting, Yanni and Andrea Boccelli have all performed major events here in the shadow of the Acropolis. Search and compare cheap flights to Greece.

  • Jones Beach Theater, Wantagh, NY, United States

An iconic landmark for Long Island and the greater New York area, this waterfront amphitheater once had a true standout stage. It was on an island all its own with a moat separating the audience from the performers. A boat had to deliver the stars of the show to perform. The moat has since been filled in, but the feeling of seeing a show with the waves lapping at your feet remains. The Jones Beach Theater is part of the Jones Beach Park, a stretch of protected beaches just 33 miles (or a subway ride) from Manhattan. It features expansive views of picturesque Long Island Sound and the Atlantic as well as good acoustics for all 15,000 seats. And, in true New York style, even after taking a severe blow from Hurricane Sandy last fall, the show will go on at Jones Beach. The restoration efforts wrapped up just in time for the opening of the 2013 season. Expect to take in Fleetwood Mac, One Direction, Lil? Wayne and Train along with the view this summer. Search and compare cheap flights to New York.

  • Ushua?a Beach Hotel, Ibiza, Spain

There is a lot of scenery on this Spanish island, where the hot Mediterranean sun blazes. A renowned party spot, Ibiza is a mix of blue waters, stunning sunsets, big rock faces, large yachts and scantily clad tourists. In the midst of this scene lies Ushua?a Beach Hotel. Steps from the beach, the hotel features a courtyard with a giant asymmetrical pool and a stage that, from early afternoon, pulses with electronic music. A mix of local artists and DJs keeps the party going all summer with a dancing crowd surging every corner of the pool deck and the balconies of the overlooking hotel rooms. The high tech light show often keeps going until the rising sun takes over. Search and compare cheap flights to Spain.
