Joplin Fire Chief Mitch Randles said he still thought it was possible to pull survivors out of the wreckage left from Sunday's powerful tornado, the deadliest to hit the U.S. in nearly 60 years. At least 125 people are now listed as dead, with hundreds injured and hundreds more unaccounted for.

"I am hopeful," Randles said. "We've had stories from earthquakes and tsunamis and other disasters of people being found two or three weeks later, and we are hopeful we'll have a story like that to tell."

Mike Hare has scoured the ravaged Joplin neighborhood where his 16-year-old son Lantz last was seen. He's called hospitals from Dallas to Kansas City.

"We know he's hurt somewhere," Hare said. "We just can't sit and keep calling. You've got to be moving."

Hare is among an increasingly desperate group of people in Joplin pleading for help in tracking down one of the dwindling number of people still missing in the wake of Sunday's storm. They're scrawling signs in wreckage, calling in by the hundreds to local radio stations and posting on the Internet.

Randles and others leading the search effort say it's impossible to know exactly how many people are truly missing, since many may have simply left the area without getting in touch with their families. They believe most will be OK. Officials planned to release a list Thursday morning of people still considered missing.

But there was little let-up in the severe weather that has pounded the region for days.

The National Weather Service issued tornado watches and a series of warnings in a dozen states on Wednesday, stretching from Texas though the Mississippi River valley to Ohio. By Thursday morning, tornado watches were in effect in most of Mississippi, northwestern Alabama and central Kentucky.

"This is just a wild ride," said Beverly Poole, chief meteorologist at the National Weather Service's office in Paducah, Ky.

In Missouri, a tornado struck the west-central town of Sedalia, destroying dozens of mobile homes and ripping through six blocks of businesses. About 20 people suffered minor injuries. Officials in Sedalia ended the school year several days early because of damage to buses.

Central Indiana was also assessing damage after a powerful storm system brought severe thunderstorms and tornadoes overnight. At least a dozen people were hospitalized and homes were swept off their foundations.

In Bedford, resident Vicki Lee watched as the tornado slammed into her neighbor's house.

"It was scary and you just have a lot of emotions going on, praying that everybody is okay and safe and hoping that no lives have been lost in it," she told NPR.

"We're very fortunate," Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig told the AP.

Strong winds, rain and at least four possible tornadoes knocked down power lines and damaged at least one home and a number of farm buildings Wednesday across central and eastern Illinois.

"Mostly it was shingles off roofs and garages," said Illinois Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Patti Thompson.

Wednesday's storms followed a deadly outbreak Tuesday in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas that killed at least 15 people.

The Fedora Project announced the final release of Fedora 15 "Lovelock," the first Linux distro to feature the new GNOME 3 desktop. Other Fedora 15 features include Linux 2.6.38, a dynamic firewall, the SystemD configuration utility, and new applications including LibreOffice and Firefox 4.

There do not appear to be many notable changes to Fedora 15 since the beta was released last month. As promised, Lovelock appears to be the first Linux distribution to offer GNOME 3, a major overhaul to the leading Linux desktop environment that has received more brickbats than bouquets from the Linux community since its April release.

(Click to enlarge) If it's any consolation to the GNOME Foundation, however, Canonical is getting just as much grief over Ubuntu 11.04's new Unity desktop. While the criticisms are varied and distinct, a general theme for both new environments is that the designers went overboard on trying to reach out to novice users, and in the process limited ease of configuration for more experienced Linux users.

Fedora users who agree with the GNOME 3 critiques can instead switch over to the rival KDE 4.6 (see image below), as well as the lightweight LXDE and XFCE 4.8. The latter features "a new panel, Thunar enhancements and more," says the Fedora project.

(Click to enlarge) Fedora 15 builds upon Linux kernel 2.6.38, and adds SystemD as the default configuration utility. SystemD, which replaces SysVinit and Upstart for system and session management. helps produce a faster boot experience, says the project.

Other new features include a dynamic firewall feature, and a cloud-oriented BoxGrinder appliance builder. New applications are said to include Firefox 4 and the new OpenOffice.org clone LibreOffice 3.3.

Early feedback: thumbs up for SystemD, power management

First-look feedback on the final Fedora 15 can be found at Ars Technica where Ryan Paul seems pleased, and even has some nice things to say about the much-maligned GNOME 3. Paul also takes a deeper look into the SystemD init system, and while he declines to pass judgment, he is certainly intrigued with its possibilities.

Meanwhile, at ZDNet Stephen Vaughan-Nichols is far more critical of GNOME 3, although he praises other Fedora 15 touches including the new LibreOffice, the dynamic firewall, and a nicely improved RPM 4.9.0 package manager. He also tested Fedora 15's touted power management improvements, and found them to be significant, delivering roughly 10 percent more battery life on a notebook computer.

Vaughan-Nichols also liked Fedora's implementation of Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environments (SPICE) virtual desktops. Following a tradition of the Red Hat-sponsored Fedora featuring cutting-edge technology that later appears in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), RHEL will be getting SPICE soon.

RHEL 6.1, by the way, was finally made available to one and all last week after being gifted to select partners at the Red Hat Summit earlier this month.

Actors James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are breathing a sigh of relief after giving their approval to the final cut of their new movie X-men: First Class, because they feared it would turn out "really bad".

The Last King of Scotland star portrays Professor Charles Xavier in the prequel, while Fassbender plays mutant superhero Magneto alongside a cast which includes Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Kevin Bacon and January Jones.

But McAvoy and Fassbender admit they were "worried" about how the movie would come together on the big screen, because comic book adaptations are usually either big hits or big misses.

McAvoy tells WENN, "I phoned Michael within a half hour (of seeing it) saying, 'Dude, you've got to see this movie really quick because you're gonna be relieved. You're gonna be able to go to the toilet again properly.'

"We were worried man because sometimes these things are a nightmare to make and it's well documented so there's no point in hiding out but it turned out really good. I think we always thought it could either be really different and really brilliant or really bad and really different."

And their co-star Bacon, who plays Sebastian Shaw, a mutant with kinetic energy powers, was equally blown away by director Matthew Vaughn's finished work.

He says, "I was completely knocked out and many people who I contacted said, 'I don't think I've ever heard you react to one of your movies like that.' It was also super cool for me because there's so much that I'm not in that I wasn't really seeing it being shot. I didn't see all the sets so a lot of the stuff I was seeing for the first time and the effects are jaw dropping. I had no idea what my own power was gonna look like so I was thrilled."

There's been so much chatter about Apple iCloud that you'd think the streaming music service had already been announced and the deals inked. But it's still just a rumor until an Apple executive takes the stage and unleashes the Amazon Cloud Player and Google Music competitor in a spate of superlatives. That hasn't stopped Businessweek from stepping up with a good summary of all that is "known" thus far, while giving us some insight into the particulars of how the service will work and the motivations to make it happen. One revelation, sourced from three people in the know, claims that Apple will scan customers' iTunes libraries (hello, LaLa) and quickly mirror the contents on Apple's own servers -- no massive DSL-choking upload required. And Apple will do you the solid of "replacing" any low bitrate tracks with the "high-quality" versions it stores in its fully licensed music locker for streaming to your connected devices.

Of course, this value-add won't come free and will certainly require a subscription fee. The cost to the consumer, though, is still very much unclear as is the service's integration with Apple's $99 per year MobileMe sham. And you know those rumors about MobileMe being offered as a free service? We wouldn't be surprised if it stays at $99 with iCloud being announced as a "free" feature update, aka, an $8.25 per month music subscription. Regardless, it's this subscription model that has the major labels so enthusiastic as it will finally allow them to extort fees for all that pirated audio you may have stumbled upon since Napster was loosed on an unprepared music industry a decade ago. All signs point to WWDC for this to get official but we're sure to hear more -- much more -- before the event kicks off on June 6th.

Left-leaning Ed Schultz has been suspended from MSNBC for referring to fellow radio host Laura Ingraham as a ?right-wing slut? and ?talk slut? on his syndicated show Tuesday.

In a statement released Wednesday, the cable channel said: ?MSNBC management met with Ed Schultz this afternoon and accepted his offer to take one week of unpaid leave for the remarks he made yesterday on his radio program. Ed will address these remarks on his show tonight, and immediately following begin his leave. Remarks of this nature are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.?

The remark came as Schultz was taking aim at Ingraham over her criticism of President Obama's trip to Ireland -- where he apparently enjoyed a beer -- while the Midwest was experience severe weather, including devastating tornadoes.

"And what are the Republicans thinking about?" Schultz said. "They're not thinking about their next-door neighbor. They're just thinking about how much this is going to cost. President Obama is going to be visiting Joplin, Mo., on Sunday, but you know what they?re talking about, like this right-wing slut, what?s her name? Laura Ingraham? Yeah, she?s a talk slut.You see, she was, back in the day, praising President Reagan when he was drinking a beer overseas. But now that Obama?s doing it, they?re working him over."

Ingraham has slammed Schultz for the remarks. In a posting on her Facebook wall, she wrote: "The crude comments made about me by Ed Schultz on his radio program: First, I was surprised to learn that Ed Schultz actually hosted a radio show. Is it only available online? ?Second, I have to get back to recording the audio edition of my new book ?Of Thee I Zing.? Now I?m tempted to insert one additional zing -- about men who preach civility but practice misogyny."
