Yesterday night, I had the pleasure of seeing Scorsese's PUBLIC SPEAKING, a very fine documentary about writer/speaker Fran Lebowitz, followed by a Q&A with Lebowitz herself. It's not the meatiest or showiest documentary ever made, but it is genuinely hilarious--largely because Lebowitz is genuinely hilarious--and Scorsese makes fascinating use of shocking archival footage in a few places (he also recreates some moments from TAXI DRIVER). I have to imagine that most people would have a great time with the film. The crowd I was with certainly loved it to pieces. (Trailer available here.)And, while most people won't have this part of my experience (unfortunately, I might add), the Q&A with Lebowitz was a riot. She's a relentless snark machine, but it's snark with some real thought behind it. In the documentary, Toni Morrison describes Lebowitz's writing and statements as almost exactly right, but never fair, and I think that's a far better description of Lebowitz's style than I could offer.
