Canada winless at women's water polo tournament after 8-6 loss to U.S.

Canada saw its medal hopes dashed in an 8-6 loss to the United States on Friday in quarter-final action at the FINA World League Super Final women's water polo tournament.

Anna Yelizarova of Montreal led the Canadians with three goals, Emily Csikos of Calgary added two and Krystina Alogbo of Riviere-des-Prairies, Que., one.

Rachel Riddell of Victoria was in goal.

The U.S. led 3-1 after a quarter, 5-2 at the half and 7-4 after three. The U.S., and Canada were 1-2 at the 2009 world championships.

?Tonight was a much better performance for the team compared to how we played in the first three games,? said Canada's head coach Patrick Oaten.

?Our outside shooting is still problematic but we are addressing this issue and I am confident it will improve in the last two games. We need to build on this game and come out even stronger tomorrow evening against Greece.?

Canada moves into the consolation playoff round where it will battle for fifth spot beginning Saturday against the Greeks.

In other quarter-finals Friday, Australia beat Greece 10-8, China edged Spain 13-12 in a shootout and Italy stunned Russia 21-20 also in a shootout.
