Smit Patel lavishes praise on Unmukt Chand ? Cricket News Update

India?s wicketkeeper batsman, Smit Patel, who scored the title clinching runs in the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup final against Australia, on Sunday, has said that he was always confident of lifting the coveted trophy.

India, the 2008 World Cup champions defeated hosts Australia by six wickets in the final, at the Tony Ireland Stadium, Townsville to clinch the title for the third time.

While chasing 226 to win the coveted trophy, the Men in Blue started magnificently and were quite comfortable at 60 for 1 at the end of 10th over. Baba Aparajith?s dismissal in the 15th over was followed by quick wickets of Hanuma Vihari (4) and Vijay Zol (1), as India were reduced to 97 for 4 in the 25th over.

Then came to the crease Smit Patel and shared an unbeaten 130-run stand with skipper Unmukt Chand to take the side home in the 48th over, with six wickets to spare. Patel played an unbeaten knock of 62 runs while Chand played a magnificent innings of 111 runs, studded with six towering sixes and seven muscular boundaries.

The 19-year-old Gujarat cricketer lavished praise on skipper Chand for leading the side from the front.

"It was awesome batting with (captain) Unmukt (Chand). He is a match-winner," said the wicketkeeper batsman during a post-match media interaction.?

"We kept discussing our strategy during our partnership. I was quite confident that if we continued (the way we were playing), we could achieve the target (even if) with difficulty.?

"The situation was quite tentative when we lost the fourth wicket for 97 but we stuck to our basics. Our coach had told us whenever there is pressure we should just stick to our basics and that's what we did," he added further.

After kick starting their World Cup campaign with a four-wicket defeat at the hands of West Indies U-19, the Men in Blue went on to defeat Zimbabwe, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan and New Zealand, to reach the tournament finals, where they defeated the defending Champions, Australia to win the title.

This is the third time India won an U-19 World Cup, after 2000 and 2008.
