Region added 15,600 jobs in 2Q, better than U.S. rate, Columbus 2020 says

Columbus 2020's second-quarter economic report pegs the region's jobs growth as outpacing the statewide and national averages.

Central Ohio gained 15,600 jobs in the second quarter, outpacing job growth in the state and U.S., according to the latest quarterly report released Wednesday by Columbus 2020.

The region?s economic development organization said the 11-county area?s 1.6 percent rate of job growth was well above the 0.5 percent increase for Ohio and the 0.4 percent growth for the country.

?The Columbus region has consistently outperformed state and national employment growth, which is a testament to the area?s economic diversity and overall competitiveness,? Columbus 2020 Research Director Jung Kim said in a press release. ?Although the regional unemployment rate was slightly up in June from the 6 percent rate in March, this is largely due to the increase in both employed residents and the labor force.?

Jung was referring to the (seasonally adjusted) uptick in the unemployment rate in June thanks to more formerly discouraged workers getting back in the job market, which puts them back in the labor pool for statistical purposes.

The biggest gains came in leisure (5 percent), manufacturing (3.2 percent), business services (3.1 percent) and health care (2.7 percent)
