Beyond Money: A Look at Giving: Corporate Philanthropy ...

I?m beginning to think that institutional philanthropy is just too corporate for my taste. I guess I?m changing or I?m just not buying into all the hype and fluff that so many larger than life nonprofits offer. Really, it is a direct challenge to the many assumptions we hold without even realizing it. Does everything need to be scaled bigger? If we raise more money will we actually impact more change? Research continues to show the opposite and then of course grand works, scientific discovery, medical research, and major universities would not exit without such institutional giving. So I?m not saying they are all bad or that society does not need big charity. They do have their place in civilization, but the constant bugging of donors for dollars I guess seems to be what wears me out. Or it might be just the offering more than they can deliver and then always having a reason for failure. And yes, big philanthropy requires financial risk and research and development, but it also requires for funds to be distributed wisely and still not being held in bank accounts years later after storms like Katrina or Sandy hit and the money still sits there while everyone else has moved onto the latest and greatest sensationalized emotionalized hype. Earmarked funds that never get where they are going, but that were pumped up on the backs of such storms continue to be a shame and disgrace to often corporate philanthropy.?
