BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Dow Chemical announced the expansion of an existing plant and the building of two new plants west of the Mississippi River that will create 71 new jobs with a salary of more than $49,000. It is also expected to generate an additional 470 new indirect jobs.

Dow is investing $1.6 billion in the project. The company plans to build one plant in West Baton Rouge Parish and the other in Iberville Parish.

The plants will increase the chemical supply for Dow's performance plastics unit for things like sporting goods, automotive interiors and home furnishings.

The money will also cover upgrades to its current Ethylene plant in Plaquemine.

The upgrades to the current plant are expected to begin immediately. Construction on the two new plants are slated to start by the end of the year.

Dow opened their Louisiana Operations facility in 1956 on 1,500 acres located near Plaquemine in West Baton Rouge and Iberville parishes. Currently, Louisiana Operations has 23 production units manufacturing more than 50 chemical products that are used to produce everything from cosmetics to detergent to plastic packaging. According to Dow's website, the facility employs 1,500 direct employees and another 1,600 contractors, and the company is the largest taxpayer and employer in both West Baton Rouge and Iberville parishes.
