Allen family feels targeted after nearby home painted with swastikas ...

An Allen woman says her family feels targeted after an abandoned house near her home was spray painted with swastikas and racial slurs.

The house on North Bonham Drive, which is near the McDermott Drive exit of U.S. 75, had its white wooden walls covered with red swastikas, ?white power?, ?SS? and the n-word. It sits behind the home of Pamela Franklin, who said her family of four are the only black residents in the area.

?I feel like whoever did it knows that we lived there,? Franklin said. ?I don?t know what their intention was, but I do feel like we were targeted.?

Franklin notified police, but investigators said they have no suspects in the crime. If caught, the vandals would at least face a Class B misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief, though that penalty could be increased, Sgt. John Felty said.

?We are attempting to find out who owns the house,? Felty said. ?We don?t even know that at the moment.?

Franklin said she saw the graffiti on her way back home from driving her 7-year-old and 10-year-old daughters to school at Cheatham Elementary. Now, she is trying to decide how to tell them about what she saw.

?I will have to tell them because I want them to be aware,? she said. ?If they are outside playing and someone drives by the house and says something to them ? I never know their intentions.?

Franklin said she has lived in the neighborhood for about a year and has felt safe until now.

?Most of the neighbors are older and white and they are all friendly and nice,? she said. ?Everybody waves when you drive by.?

Police have contacted the city?s public works department, which will wash off or paint over the racist marks.
