Location: The Bridge, Sunday, Aug. 7, 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

A benefit for much-loved West Seattle resident Tracy Dart is now official. Called "We Heart Tracy Dart", it will take place at the Bridge Bar & Restaurant, 4439 35th Ave. SW, in West Seattle Sunday, Aug. 7, 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.Ms. Dart is a high-profile advocate for breast cancer research and tireless fundraiser with her "TEAM TRACY Race For The Cure", an annual Susan G. Komen event to help find a cure for Breast Cancer.

On her personal blog today, she wrote:

Yesterday was my 4th chemo treatment - just 8 to go. I think the two weeks off between treatments helped, sort of. Gave me a little time to have fun...it also gave me some time to get angry about cancer. Realizing what a difference there is between feeling really horrible - and then feeling good enough to have fun with my friends and family...it just made me a little resentful that this is how I would be spending my summer. I need to get over it...because it is happening whether I like it or not.

Another thing that I started thinking about this week...when people have an obvious disability, or look sick or injured - we tend to give them sympathy, the benefit of the doubt...maybe even a little pity.

There are about eight organizers for the fundraiser, which began with Alki resident Lisa Dawson. Dawson has been involved with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization since 1997. She chaired their Race for the Cure in 2001 and 2003, has been on their board of directors for six years, and on their public policy Committee. She currently chairs the Koman Gala Auction for the third year in the row. She has gone to Washington, D.C. three times to lobby for breast cancer funding.

"I know how to throw a party," said Dawson." I know how to organize a fundraiser. I've been searching for financial support for people going through breast cancer. There is a lot of out of pocket expenses, even if you have medical support. For Tracy having gone through treatment twice was a pretty big strain. Then I find out a month ago she was diagnosed for a third time, and what popped into my mind was the financial hit she would be going through. It's just going to be staggering.

"Tracy does all this stuff to raise money to find a cure, for Koman, and NW Hope and Healing, and never asks for anything for herself," said Dawson. "She gives and she gives and she gives and everything she asks for is to fight breast cancer. When you are healing, your body needs to have as little stress as possible, and if you're stressed out about bills you're not going to heal as quickly.

"I got involved because my grandma had breast cancer," Dawson added. "She is a 49 year survivor, and just turned 90. My mom was diagnosed in 2002, my aunt in 2000. They're doing great. They caught it really early."

Dawson said Dart was humbled and reluctant at first when approached about the fundraiser idea.

"I stopped by West 5 and Tracy happened to be sitting there," Dawson recalled. "I said, 'You are exactly the person I want to see', and said I wanted to do a benefit for her. And she said, 'Oh, for Team Tracy?' And I said, 'No. For you. Would you be OK with that'. She said, 'Not really, but I probably should be'. Then we kind of talked about what I had in mind."
