International Development - National Communications Manager China

Founded as the Rural Development Institute in 1967, Landesa has helped more than 100 million poor families gain legal control over their land. ?With secure land rights, these families can eat better, earn more, educate their children, practice conservation, and achieve dignity for generations.

The National Communications Manager (NCM) provides leadership, direction, and coordination of Landesa?s communication program in China to advance support for land rights. The NCM will work closely with the global advocacy team based in Seattle, WA (USA), providing timely analysis of China program momentum, written and visual content and strategic insight to build a global case for the cause of land rights within the international development community. Reporting to the China Country Director, the NCM is a full time role?which will require local, regional, and international travel.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Prepare and implement a national communications plan, in coordination with other team members and stakeholders, consistent with Landesa?s mission, strategic objectives, and program objectives.
  • Manage budget for Landesa communication & advocacy related activities in China.
  • Provide technical assistance to program staff in China and on occasion, play a lead role in the development and implementation of their research and project communication plans. This may include planning, implementing, editing, designing, and other services as required.
  • Prepare external communications materials or tailor existing global materials for China audiences.
  • Identify and maintain good relationships with key partners, including journalists and communications contractors.
  • Serve as primary liaison between China and Seattle global advocacy teams.
  • Fully understand and be supportive of Landesa?s mission and strategic and program objectives.
  • Obtain, understand, and effectively communicate and disseminate project research in a timely way to Seattle-based global advocacy team.
  • Regularly compile content collected from progress in China programme. This includes but is not limited to internal and external newsletters, new research from our field work; compiling stories of progress through photography and video documentation, strategic analysis of rural poverty trends in China, connecting larger themes to the role of land rights, and illuminating new program partnerships with government and other stakeholders.
  • Serve as a key member of our global advocacy team and participate in regular dialogue about best ways to champion land rights within the international development community.
  • Provide continuous creative insight to the global advocacy team about how momentum in China can help shape larger narrative about the potential impact of secure land rights.
  • In coordination with Seattle based Chief Communications Officer (CCO), support the implementation of Landesa?s overall strategic advocacy plan, especially as it relates to China.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A deep commitment to the mission of a better, safer future for the world?s poorest people through land ownership and secure land rights.

  • Excellent interpersonal and coordination skills and an exacting attention to detail. Strong time management and organizational skills. Ability to set and meet goals.
  • Superior ability to juggle multiple tasks, prioritize competing priorities, and move seamlessly between China-focused projects and global advocacy objectives.
  • A strong drive for excellence in work products and personal performance.
  • Demonstrated writing talent across multiple platforms.
  • Knowledge of internet-based research, rural development, gender, and poverty issues.
  • Fluency in oral and written English and Chinese.
  • Working knowledge of budgets and financials.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Suite of products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, and other software.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a range of people at all levels, including Landesa global staff, project management team, Landesa donors, Landesa partners including government officials, visitors, contractors and subcontractors, outside vendors and services suppliers, and other administrative staff members.

Education and Experience:

  • Graduate or professional degree in Communications or related field is required.?
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience that includes the performance of some or all of the duties described above.
  • Field experience working in global advocacy with an international NGO is highly desired.
