Samsung Releases Galaxy 3GS, Or Something

IconHold on to your panties, because this should come as a surprise: I'm actually agreeing that Samsung is copying Apple. The Korean company just released a new entry-level Android smartphone, and it's called the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus. While Apple's previous complaints regarding Samsung's supposed copying were obviously nonsense, this Galaxy Ace Plus, on the other hand... It's almost as if Samsung is giving Apple the finger by copying the iPhone 3G(S) almost verbatim.

Previous Samsung phones and tablets were drastically different from Apple's devices, making Apple's claims to the contrary a bit hollow to those with no special affinity for any one company. This time around, however, there's no denying the obvious: the Galaxy Ace Plus is an almost 1:1 copy of the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

The story I'm linking to is a bit funny, since it's acting as if this is the first time Apple and its fanatics are accusing Samsung of copying the 3G(S) - even though basically all Apple's complaints deal with the 3G(S). The fact that the Galaxy Ace Plus looks so much like the 3GS just demonstrates how wrong they were when it comes to calling, say, the Galaxy SII a 3GS rip-off.

In all seriousness, this time around, the likeness is so striking you can't really ignore it. I wonder how Samsung ever thought this was a good idea - especially now that Apple is busier filing lawsuits than unveiling products. This might surprise you, but in this case, I would say Apple is well within its right to sue Samsung.

I'd love to know Samsung's thought process here. Unbelievable.

Troops, tanks patrol in northeast Nigeria (Reuters)

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) ? Heavily armed troops and tanks patrolled the streets of Maiduguri in northeast Nigeria Sunday, witnesses said, after the president declared a state of emergency in parts of the north affected by an Islamist insurgency.

President Goodluck Jonathan imposed the state of emergency on the northeast, the conflict-prone central city of Jos, and part of Niger state near Abuja Saturday, and closed the borders with Cameroon, Chad and Niger in the northeast.

Nearly a week after the radical sect Boko Haram set off a series of bombs across Nigeria on Christmas Day, including one at a church that killed at least 37 people and wounded 57, Jonathan told state television his aim was to restore security in troubled parts of the north.

A Reuters reporter in Maiduguri, a remote city in the northeast and the center of the Boko Haram insurgency, saw several tanks patrolling the city and groups of a dozen or more soldiers at a time out on foot patrol.

"We woke up this morning only to see armed soldiers all over the place and some tanks patrolling. We fear what may happen next," said Maiduguri resident Buba Guduf.

Jonathan said he had told his chief of defense staff to take other "appropriate" measures, including setting up a special counter-terrorism force.

The blasts at churches have raised fears that Boko Haram, a movement styled on the Taliban, is trying to ignite sectarian strife in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation and top oil producer.

Jonathan has been criticized by the opposition and Christian groups for what they said was a slow response to the bombings.

CLASHES FEARED

Residents of Maiduguri, located on the threshold of the Sahara Desert, have borne the brunt of previous clashes between Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is forbidden," and security forces.

Friday three explosions struck Maiduguri shortly after Muslim prayers but caused no casualties, and gunmen shot dead three members of a Muslim cleric's family.

Gun battles between security forces and Boko Haram killed at least 68 people in two days of fighting in the nearby city of Damaturu on December 22 and 23.

"The soldiers have intensified their patrol in our area and most people prefer to remain indoors for fear of the unknown," Ibrahim Usman, from the Gwange ward of Maiduguri, told Reuters by telephone.

"We are just doing our normal duty," said an officer for the Joint Military Taskforce for Maiduguri, who could not be named because he was not authorized to speak.

The bomb attacks by Boko Haram have strained Nigeria's already fractious north-south divide.

Jonathan, a Christian from the south, upset many northerners by running for and winning the presidency in April, tearing up what many saw as a tacit deal to rotate the top job between a northerner and a southerner every two terms.

More than 500 people were killed in post-election violence in the north after Jonathan's victory, reflecting long-standing northern grievances about perceived alienation and exclusion by the government from the fruits of the oil wealth that is concentrated in the south.

Saturday, Jonathan visited the scene of the deadliest Christmas attack, on St. Theresa's Catholic church in Madalla, on the outskirts of Abuja.

"We will crush the terrorists," he told weeping relatives of the victims gathered in the church for a vigil.

In a separate, unrelated incident, clashes between rival ethnic groups in southeastern Ebonyi state Saturday killed at least 50 people, and police said mobile units had been sent there to quell the violence.

Those clashes are likely to add to Jonathan's woes at a time when his forces are already stretched.

California: New year brings new laws for 2012

The state Legislature has had a busy year passing 745 new laws, most of which go into effect Sunday. Here are a few new laws that stand out.

-- Employment credit reports: In most cases, prospective employers will no longer be allowed to obtain a consumer credit report. If a credit report is needed, a written notice must be provided to the prospective employee citing a specific reason for obtaining the report. Exemptions are made for certain jobs, such as positions in the Department of Justice, law enforcement or those dealing with cash.

-- Child safety seat: Children under eight years old need to be buckled into a car seat or booster seat in the back seat. The new law does away with the 6 years or 60 pounds rule.

-- Alcohol sales: Businesses will be prohibited from selling alcoholic beverages through self-service checkouts.

-- Firearms: It will be illegal to open carry an unloaded handgun in plain sight or in a car. Applying for an concealed weapon permit is still an option.

-- Rabies vaccinations: A dog can be exempt from receiving a rabies vaccination if a veterinarian can verify that receiving the vaccine would endanger the dog's life. A dog exempt from the vaccination will be required to be confined to the premises of the owner, or if off the premises, it must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet and under direct control of an adult.

-- Copper theft: Theft of copper wire where the value exceeds

$950 will be considered grand theft and is punishable by imprisonment and in county jail or state prison and fines up to $2,500 or $10,000.

-- DUI checkpoints: Law enforcement can no longer impound a car if the driver's only offense is failure to hold a valid driver's license.

-- Smoking in rentals: Landlords will be authorized to prohibit smoking of tobacco products on the property, in a dwelling unit, in another interior or exterior area or on the premises on which the dwelling unit is located.

-- Tanning: All those wishing to use an ultraviolet tanning device will have to be 18 years or older. Existing law allows 14- to 18-year-olds to use tanning devices with the consent of a parent. That rule will no longer apply.

An in-depth review of these new laws and a complete list can be found at leginfo.ca.gov/pdf/BillsEnacte-dReport2011.pdf.

Bird flu claims first casualty in China

BEIJING: The Chinese government has confirmed a 39-year-old man's death in southern China due to bird flu, which is showing signs of resurfacing after an 18-month gap.

Authorities had earlier reported that two dead birds had tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus and ordered killing of thousands of birds in Hong Kong.

The official Xinhua news agency reported that the 39-year-old bus driver died of multiple organ failure at Shenzhen in Guangdong Province. He was admitted to a hospital last Sunday after he developed pneumonia. He tested positive for bird flu over the next few days.

The victim had not travelled outside Shenzhen in the past few months. The incident had triggered panic in Shenzhen after reports that he had come in contact with nearly 120 people.

It's a new year and that means that there's lots of ooey-gooey pop goodness all ready to pour out in 2012. Between celebrity babies, music and Hollywood, fans should gear up for some really big stuff in the coming year. But if history has taught us anything, as hard as we might plan, pop culture always has a way of sneaking up and surprising us. Not that we're complaining. So get your planners out: MTV News is looking ahead at what to expect in the world of pop culture.

Music
There are lots of big album releases slated for 2012. Crossover queen Nicki Minaj will release Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded just in time to show her Barbz and Kenz some love on Valentine's Day. Madonna already has confirmed that she will drop her next album come spring. Fans already got a taste of it when the single "Gimme All Your Luvin' " leaked on the Internet. "American Idol" alum Adam Lambert is readying the release of his next album, Trespassing, set to drop in March. Willow Smith's fans should whip their hair back and forth as the tween's long-simmering debut album, Knees and Elbows, will finally drop in April. Justin Bieber has teased his Believe album for a summer release. He's shared that it will pick up where Justin Timberlake left off before he decided to focus on his acting. Basically, he's bringing sexy back. There are two forthcoming albums that don't have exact release dates but are highly anticipated nonetheless. Lady Gaga is already thinking about her next album and recently revealed to MTV News that she even has a title for her Born This Way follow-up in mind. Taylor Swift is knee-deep in and working hard on her follow-up to her phenomenally successful Speak Now. TV
In between pumping out tunes, some big shows will also return in 2012. Everything from "The Secret Circle" to "2 Broke Girls" to "New Girl" will be back for more fun come the new year. After a break, "Pretty Little Liars" will be back midseason. Will we finally find out who "A" is when season 2 resumes on January 2? Well, only that texting antagonist knows the answer. There are many other mysteries on "The Vampire Diaries" that will also have to be resolved once that show picks up again on January 5. And if all that drama is too much to handle, "Glee" will be back for more sing-along good times on January 17, with the Michael Jackson tribute episode airing one week later.

Celebrity Babies
2012 is poised to be a big year for famous babies. OK, so 2011 saw Mariah Carey and Dem Babies, but some of the most famous ladies in La La Land and beyond will become first-time moms in the new year, giving MC and her family a run for their money. Beyoncé and Jay-Z will welcome their first child into the world any day now. The twosome revealed they were in the family way at the VMAs back in August. Jessica Simpson and her fiancé, Eric Johnson, will also welcome their first little bundle of joy. The news of the pregnancy came after a lot of speculation about Simpson's expanding midsection. As it turns out, it's a big year for triple-threat moms-to-be, with Hilary Duff also expecting a baby come 2012.

(AP) ? Newt Gingrich is getting a little help from his friends.

The Republican presidential candidate's allies plan to run a half-hour television special on local Iowa stations this weekend, a last-ditch attempt to help Gingrich rebound from a slide in polls ahead of Tuesday's Iowa caucuses. An independent outside organization made up of Gingrich backers, called a super PAC, also is running ads on his behalf as others are doing for his rivals.

It's the first time in this race where an organization has reserved 30 minutes of airtime to promote a candidate.

The conservative media company Newsmax hired Michael Reagan, the son of President Ronald Reagan, to host the special. It focuses on Gingrich's political career and successes as a conservative leader, and Michael Reagan calls Gingrich "a person who we believe will help continue my father's legacy."

It couldn't come at a better time for Gingrich. He doesn't have the money to counter the millions of dollars that his rivals have spent to blanket the state's airwaves with attack ads ? many from a super PAC aligned with rival Mitt Romney ? that have damaged his campaign.

Reagan told The Associated Press he agreed to host the program in part because he's concerned that the many conservative alternatives to Romney will splinter the conservative vote in Iowa and allow the former Massachusetts governor ? he is considered more moderate ? to win. Reagan has not endorsed a candidate for the 2012 election.

"Newt Gingrich and I have been friends for a long time and so when Newsmax asked me I was happy to say yes," Reagan said.

In the midst of a 22-stop bus tour across the state, Gingrich will continue campaigning through Iowa on Saturday, a day after he choked up and wiped away tears while recalling his late mother's struggle with depression and mental illness.

Speaking at an event with mothers in Des Moines, the former House speaker said his focus on brain science comes directly from "dealing with the real problems of real people in my family."

"And so it's not a theory. It's, in fact, my mother," he said as he wiped away tears.

"I do policy much easier than I do personal," Gingrich said. The tears flowed as the former speaker responded to questions about his mother from a pollster and longtime political ally.

Kit Gingrich died in 2003 at the age of 77. Gingrich said Friday she spent her final years in a long-term care facility where she suffered from depression, bipolar disease and gradually acquired physical ailments.

The moment was reminiscent of Hillary Rodham Clinton's teary-eyed response to a question just before the 2008 Democratic primary in New Hampshire. The former first lady's rare emotional response was credited with humanizing her in the eyes of voters and she went to pull off a win in the state.

His two daughters and his wife, Callista, were in the audience.

"Callista will tell you I get teary-eyed every time we sing Christmas carols," he said.
