Party members demand probe in congressman slaying (AP)

ACAPULCO, Mexico ? Fellow party members of a slain Mexican congressman from southern Guerrero state published a letter in newspapers Monday demanding a local politician be investigated in the case.

Efren Leyva, president of the Guerrero chapter of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, urged authorities to investigate state Rural Development Secretary Socorro Ramirez in the killing of Congressman Moises Villanueva and his driver.

The outcry by state PRI members hasn't been echoed elsewhere in Mexico, where the slaying was viewed as a local crime in a state rife with political and drug violence.

Residents spotted the badly decomposed bodies in a river in the town of Huamuxtitlan and alerted police Saturday. The dead men had been missing since Sept. 4, after leaving a party held by a fellow PRI member in Villanueva's district.

Villanueva, 46, replaced Ramirez in Congress after he left the PRI earlier this year to join the leftist Democratic Revolution Party shortly before being named to his state government post.

"We publicly demand Socorro Sofio Ramirez Hernandez, rural development secretary for the government of Guerrero, be investigated because he is known to have pressured Villanueva at various times to subordinate him to his personal interests," Leyva wrote.

Ramirez denied any involvement and said he would sue PRI members for slander.

"PRI members in Guerrero are being too politically perverse," Ramirez told Milenio Television on Monday.

Guerrero state Attorney General Alberto Lopez said Ramirez was not being investigated in the case because there was no evidence pointing to his involvement.

Lopez also said police had not determined a motive in Villanueva's killing. He said that despite claims by PRI members, there was no proof that the congressman was kidnapped for ransom.

Guerrero is a drug-plagued southwestern state that include the Pacific resort of Acapulco and it has seen a series of killings of politicians and political violence the last few years.

Two years ago, gunmen killed the state legislature's presiding lawmaker. The body of leftist Armando Chavarria, who was poised to be the next governor, was found in the passenger seat of a vehicle in the state capital of Chilpancingo. The case hasn't been solved.

In 2007, Guerrero state lawmaker Jose Jorge Bajos of President Felipe Calderon's National Action Party was shot to death. Authorities blamed the politician who had been selected by Bajos as his alternate in the event he left office, accusing her of paying a hit man to kill Bajos so she could take the post.

"The general sense of impunity (in Guerrero) is even more so" than in the rest of Mexico, said John Ackerman at the legal research institute at the National Autonomous University in Mexico City.

Those crimes "are seen as issues of local politics," he added.

Notion Ink CEO 'confirms' Ice Cream Sandwich in Oct., OMAP as reference platform; says Adam will update in Nov.

The CEO of Notion Ink, Rohan Shravan, has "outed" some more news about the Ice Cream Sandwich release.  Yes, this is the same fellow who told us about Gingerbread a few days in advance last time around (which is why we looked twice).  In a post at the Notion Ink blog about plans to improve the graphics performance of the Adam, Shravan says a couple really interesting things -- Google will be releasing Ice Cream Sandwich in late October, OMAP devices will be the preferred platform (and receive the update before Tegra devices), and the Notion Ink will have the Adam updated by November.

Additionally, the folks at Phone Arena have confirmed with Shravan that Google has already supplied OEMs with Ice Cream Sandwich, and that Notion Ink is not one of the manufacturers to be seeded with an early release of the source code. 

We're still going to be on the lookout for something a bit more official, and none of this news is really surprising -- it has been regurgitated across the Internet for the past few months.  We'll see Ice Cream Sandwich when it's ready, and if that means next month none of us will be complaining.

Virus as a potential future cancer medicine?

ScienceDaily (Sep. 16, 2011) ? n a new project, researchers from LIFE -- the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Copenhagen -- document that the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) plays a previously unknown dual role in the prevention of a number of cancers. The new findings show that the virus both kills cancer cells and stops the expression of the molecules which certain types of cancer cells produce to hide from the immune system.

Certain types of cancer cells express far too many liquid immunostimulatory molecules, blocking the immune system's ability to recognise them, and enabling them to continue the development of cancer

"The overexpression seen in cancer types such as melanoma, testicular cancer, ovarian cancer and certain types of leukemia significantly impairs the immune system, thereby reducing the patient's chance of recovery," says Associate Professor in immunology S?ren Skov from LIFE.

S?ren Skov is heading a research team which has just launched a major EU project to study the potential for improving cancer treatment by strengthening the immune system.

Oncolytic virus

As part of the research project, PhD student Helle Jensen has infected human cancer cells with VSV.

"We were able to demonstrate that the virus kills cancer cells. The results also show that VSV effectively blocks the production of the immunostimulatory molecules which certain types of cancer overexpress to destroy the immune system and thus the chances of survival," Associate Professor Skov says.

This is a clear breakthrough and a giant leap towards better cancer treatment. The immune system will be able to more effectively stop the development of cancer when not sidelined. In addition, it is possible to mutate the virus and thus adapt it to the relevant type of cancer. There is thus a potential for a future alternative to chemotherapy, tailored to the individual patient, says Associate Professor S?ren Skov.

"The next step will be clinical trials in humans. Such trials are already being conducted in the USA," says Helle Jensen, who has carried out the research project at LIFE in collaboration with the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Copenhagen and the National Veterinary Institute at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
