Rick Bava on Baby Boom Generation: One Bathroom.......

On the South side of Chicago in the early 1960's in an area known as Bridgeport families lived in harmony before they pursued the suburbs. On Wells street across from Armour Square Park and in the immediate shadow of Comisky Park, buildings known as three flats dawned the landscape. Armour Square Park, was a place for the community to gather, Comisky Park was home to the Chicago White Sox, the major league team that the people in this close knit neighborhood rooted for, and followed religiously. This area was part of the eleventh ward, made famous by its most prominent resident, Mayor of Chicago, Richard J. Daley. In fact many of the people who lived in the community worked for the city, in the city that worked. Meaning garbage got picked up, the streets were plowed when it snowed and a climate to do business existed..............................People all knew each other in what they called the neighborhood. They helped one another. They went to the same church on Sunday, they brought home made food to a friend not because they thought they needed it but because they would enjoy the treat. On warm summer nights people sat outside on the steps, people from down the block would come over and visit. It was social, culture was similar and enjoyment was derived from a cadre of people not just in your circle, or your club, but from the shared experience. But all played a factor, many were of the same heritage,? on Wells Street for example were Italians and part of Santa Lucia church. Over by St Davids where the Daley's lived mostly Irish were on those blocks. That is the way it was for when people came from Europe and settled, they moved into areas where they knew people and there was a comfort zone.............................People in this time frame were fans of Sinatra, but were excited when this new group from England, The Beatles played Sox Park as Comisky was referred too. At 3247 So. Wells lived a family, in a three story building. On the second floor the family that owned the building was raising three sons. The mother of those three sons, well her parents lived on the third floor, while close family friends with two daughters lived on the first floor. All three apartments had one bathroom. Somehow everyone survived. In fact the better term is everyone thrived. Of the five children just mentioned, only one the youngest born in 1955, is a actual Baby Boomer. He being one of the three sons. He was like a mascot to the older brothers, and a novelty to the two girls on the first floor. But he had a ring side seat to the times. That one bathroom, where his middle brother got ready for a dance at St. Rita High school, by taking the longest shower one could imagine. Where a radio was plugged in during the shower as Connie Francis, Nat King Cole and The Lettermen came through the receiver. It was an easy time, a happy time, when getting a pizza from Ricobene's after midnight on Friday was a must. You see as Catholics you could not eat meat on Friday. Most of the time for a cheeseburger, or a piece of custard pie, you went to David's at 31st and Halsted, a institution for the people of Bridgeport, who of course, just called it Dave's............................Many who lived in the neighborhood raised families, and generation to generation remained a part of the fabric. But by 1965, like much of America, many families sought bigger homes, grass , a yard, new schools, and multiple bathrooms, perhaps in a nice brick ranch home in the suburbs. That was America after, but before people just lived in the neighborhood. It is interesting many Baby Boomers remember childhood as described above. They remember when they moved, started at a new school. Many families can trace higher education to the move to the suburbs. But it is very romantic somehow to think of the early 1960's and think about a different life, vinyl records, Dick Clark, Mickey Mouse, more specifically, the Mickey Mouse Club. These were the Ozzie and Harriet days, where many named Richard became Ricky's because of Rick Nelson. The early 1960's living life with one bathroom, and being content.

The future of social robotics requires meeting the expectations of the human brain, as well as keenly respecting the subtle complexities of both verbal and nonverbal communication

After years of existing only in fiction, social robots are finally being designed that can more closely emulate how people express themselves, interact and learn and doing so while performing jobs like teaching social behavior to children with autism or helping stroke patients with their physical rehabilitation exercises.

But what does it take to make a robot social and engaging? Should it walk and talk just like a person? Should it be emotionally expressive and responsive? Does the personality of the robot matter? What's needed to get a robot and a human to work well together?

According to Professor Maja Matari?, University of Southern California and director of USC's Center for Robotics and Embedded Systems, while there are many challenges ahead, one of the biggest remains getting the robots to match the needs and expectations of the human mind. "How we interact with embodied machines is different than how we interact with a computer, cell phone or other intelligent devices," says "We need to understand those differences so we can leverage what is important."

Matari? has developed social robots for use in a variety of therapeutic roles. According to Matari?, one of the keys for a successfully designed social robot is considering not only how it communications verbally, but physically through facial expressions and body language. Also important: embedding the right personality. "We found that when we matched the personality of the robot to that of the user, people performed their rehab exercises longer and reported enjoying them more."

Another key is matching a robot's appearance to our perception of its abilities. Ayse Saygin is an assistant professor at the University of California San Diego and faculty member of the Kavli Institute of Brain and Mind. Last year, Saygin and her colleagues set out to discover if what they call the "action perception system" in the human brain is tuned more to human appearance or human motion. By using brain scans, they found that as people observed highly humanlike robots compared to less humanlike robots, the brain detected the mismatch and didn't respond as well. "Making robots more humanlike might seem intuitively like that's the way to go, but we find it doesn't work unless the humanlike appearance is equally matched with humanlike actions."

A social robot also needs the ability to learn socially. Andrea Thomaz is an assistant professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology and director of its Social Intelligent Machines Laboratory. At her lab, they have built a robot designed to learn from humans the way a person would -- along with speech, through observation, demonstration and social interaction. "In my lab, we see human social intelligence as being comprised of four key components the ability to learn from other people, the ability to collaborate with other people, the ability to apply emotional intelligence, and the ability to perceive and respond to another person's intentions. We try to build this social intelligence in our robots."

Friendship is the Foundation of Any Sound Relationship ...

When people think of singles dating websites, they imagine desperate people who are looking for marriage as their last hope. Actually, this is really far from the truth. Perhaps if they understood that at the base of any serious relationship stood friendship they would not defend such believes. How can you marry someone if you don?t really know him or her? And how can you know someone unless you make him or her, your friend? What reveals more about a person than friendship? What other relationship involves more commitment, devotion, fairness, honesty, unconditional love and understanding?

Friendfinder reviews reveal that many times people look for relationships in the wrong place. They should first look into their souls and understand what they need. And then, if they find someone who understands what they need as well as they understand, then they should consider themselves happy to have a friend. Friendship is the relationship that tests the moral boundaries of a human being. And what else do you need your life partner to do but to be your friend? There is no love truer than that of a friend. If friends can turn into partners for life then that is one of life?s greatest joys.

First Canada lynx in 15 years found in Idaho (Reuters)

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) ? A Canada lynx has been documented in Idaho for the first time in over 15 years when the imperiled cat was inadvertently caught in a foot-hold trap in the Salmon-Challis National Forest, state wildlife officials said on Tuesday.

"It's a very rare occurrence," Tom Keegan, regional manager with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, said about the incidental capture last week of the high-elevation, forest-dwelling cat.

He said a man walking his dogs spotted the lynx on Thursday in the rugged mountains of east central Idaho in a legal trap set for bobcat and notified state wildlife officials. They released the animal unharmed.

The last lynx confirmed in the 4.3 million-acre forest surrounding Salmon was in 1991, when one was accidentally trapped. The cats were documented elsewhere in Idaho during the 1995-1996 trapping season, after which trapping lynx was outlawed.

Lynx were designated in 2000 as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species in the lower 48 states, where they roam the high country from Maine to Washington and south through the Rocky Mountains.

The animals have long legs and large, well-furred paws, making them highly adapted for hunting in deep snow for preferred prey like snowshoe hares, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Lynx are infrequently sighted. Biologists mostly rely on tracks and scat to document the reclusive animal's presence.

Fewer than 100 lynx are believed to roam the mid- and high-elevation forests of Idaho, where they are classified as a "species of greatest conservation need."

Just 40 lynx have been recorded in east central Idaho since the late 1800s, according to Fish and Game.

A DNA sample collected from the recently captured cat will be analyzed to verify it is a wild lynx and to gain knowledge about its possible origins, Keegan said.

Like wolverines and other elusive forest carnivores, lynx can travel long distances, even hundreds of miles, he said.

Keegan said it was too early to say whether the lynx found in the Salmon-Challis forest was a sign of the animal's return to its historic range or if it was a random event.

"There's all kinds of speculation. It may be a transient animal or a resident animal," he said.

Financial Coach for Kids and Teens: Teen Taxes ? Questions to Ask

Disclaimer ? Everyone?s tax situation is different! This information should be used for your own reading and not for professional advice. Please consult your own financial advisors before making any financial decisions.

So, your teen had an amazing summer job and earned some nice spending money plus was able to add to their savings account. Sweet. However, it?s that time of year?time to pay Uncle Sam.

On your teen?s pay stub, they most likely saw the following taxes taken out of their hard-earned pay (welcome to the adult world!):

????????? Federal Tax withholding

????????? State Tax withholding

????????? Medicare

????????? Social Security

????????? Disability (SUI, SDI, FLI)

By the end of Jan, your teen should receive a W-2 from their summer employer and a 1099-INT from their bank for interest earned on their savings account. Explain to them each form and show them how to keep their records organized and ready to use for filing their taxes as needed.

NOTE: If you have other savings or brokerage accounts for your teen (i.e. money you put aside for college, etc) then you will get 1099s on those accounts too. Reminder: Custodial accounts are for the benefit of a minor child and managed by a parent or another designated custodian. For example, in New Jersey, custodial accounts are established under New Jersey?s Uniform Transfer to Minors Act (UTMA) and the custodian controls the account until the child reaches the ?age of majority? or age 21 in NJ. This means that the account reverts to your child as sole owner and they can do whatever they want with the money in the account. (All the more reason to teach good money skills at a young age!!)

OK, back to the tax forms. What should your teen do about filing taxes?

The answer is?it really does depend on your individual situation. With that said, here is some general information that you should be aware of so you can ask your financial advisors the right questions:

????????? If your teen has W-2 income and taxes were withheld yet their income is such that they didn?t have to pay the taxes, then the only way to get the tax withholding?back is to file a tax return.
????????? Your teen?s income is taxed at their own income tax rate (which is most likely lower than your tax rate).
????????? Your teen?s investment income is governed by a dual-tax structure for investment accounts (CDs, savings, brokerage). The first $950 of interest, dividends or capital gains is tax-free. The next $950 is taxed at your teen?s tax rate. Anything over $1,900 is then taxed at the parent?s top marginal tax rate rather than the 15% capital gains rate.
????????? In some cases, it may be better for you to file your teen?s investment income on your tax return and, in other cases, your teen may pay less taxes if they file separately. There are two forms to review (Form 8615 & Form 8814) that can help you and your tax preparer decide which way to file to make sure that you are paying the lowest possible tax on your teen?s investment income.
????????? Taxes get more complicated (as if that?s even possible!) for parents who are separated, unmarried, treated as unmarried for tax-filing purposes or remarried. Definitely see your financial advisor and ask lots of questions!

????????? IRA Publications for your reference:

You should confirm all the above information with your tax preparer and financial advisors ? they are your best resource.??

Unfortunately, taxes are here to stay and are not getting any easier to understand. Use this opportunity to teach your teens to search out resources, ask the right questions and get professional financial help when you need it. Disclaimer ? Everyone?s tax situation is different! This information should be used for your own reading and not for professional advice. Please consult your own financial advisors before making any financial decisions.
